Caledonia senior Coby Hammell returned the opening kick-off 82-yards to paydirt, the #2 in AA Warriors recovered two first-half Chatfield muffed punts, and Caledonia junior linebacker Cooper Allen was a beast defensively, as Cal topped Chat 53-3 convincingly in a Southeast-Yellow rivalry game. The Warriors had four, three-play or less, scoring drives in the first half. Bo Knutson’s 50-yard half-back TD pass to Liam Kupietz capped the first, a 15-yard Grant King to Hammell TD pass capped the second, a Knutson 25-yard TD run the third, and a King to Jacob Klug 27-yard TD pass the fourth. Meanwhile, Chatfield had four first-half drives that made the red zone, but they resulted in just three points, their only points, a 29-yard Ross Stoehr field goal in the first quarter. The halftime score was thus 33-3. The Warrior offense rolled up 366 yards of offense in a diplomatic fashion. King (6 of 12 passing 103 yards) threw three scores, to Hammell for two (15 and 13 yards) and Klug (3-65 receiving). The junior quarterback also had a 28-yard rushing TD. Knutson (9-90 rushing) had the rushing and passing TDs. Chase Hauser (8-74 rushing) also found paydirt on the ground. Defensively, Cooper Allen, a 6’2”, 225-pound linebacker, was a menace with five solo tackles for loss and three assisted tackles for loss including a half sack plus a fumble recovery. Charlie Mauss had 1 ½ sacks. Cabe Kronebusch recovered Chatfield’s other muffed punt. Gopher main punt returner and key player Logan Pearson was hurt early in the game. Hunter Polikowsky ran for 97 yards on 16 carries for Chatfield, much coming on a 59-yard scamper. Brooks Lea caught 3 passes for 53 yards. Three different Gopher quarterbacks completed multiple passes. Carl Fruechte’s #2-ranked Warriors (6-0, 7-0) wrapped up the Southeast-Yellow title with the win. Dover-Eyota (4-2, 5-2) beat R-P (4-2, 5-2) in week seven to force a two-way tie for second place. Chatfield (3-3, 4-3) fell back to fourth place.
