The Kingsland School Board snuck in one last summer board meeting as they met on Monday, September 21, 2026, to discuss the preliminary levy and get updates.
Students Cody Howard and Blake Krahn shared updates on the Kingsland Student Council and the Spring Valley-Wykoff Future Farmers of America (FFA).
The student council held their first meeting of the year where they discussed upcoming fundraisers and events. Their goal this year is to continue to focus on participation.
The FFA went on an officer retreat recently to visit Niagara Cave and then enjoyed lunch at the B&B Bowl in Preston.
During the Fillmore County Fair, members helped with the Little Farm Hands booth where they helped youth get firsthand experience with life on a farm.
The group participated in the Ag Days parade in August and will be in the Wykoff Fall Fest parade, as well.
Their first chapter meeting was held this month with nearly 80 members attending. Gracelyn Hubka was named September’s FFA member of the month.
The annual corn drive will be coming up in October with all proceeds going to Camp Courage, which is a camp for kids with special needs.
The annual fruit sale will begin in November with delivery in December.
Financial Report Update
Superintendent Scott Klavetter gave the board a quick update on the most recent financial report.
“We are a little bit ahead of the past. The big thing on the expenditure and revenue reports is that you’ll notice we are quite a bit ahead of years past and that is exclusively because of the construction project,” Klavetter noted, “Everything is tracking on schedule compared to years past. Things are looking pretty typical.”
Proposed Preliminary Levy
Along with cooler weather, fall also brings with it discussions of levies. As with every year, the board does not have clear numbers until later this year, but they are able to review the upcoming costs of the district and any additional needs for the next school year. What they don’t know is how much funding will be available from government aid.
“To be clear, what you are doing at this point is certifying that the board intends to certify the maximum levy amount authorized. We will come back after the Truth and Taxation meeting in December and that is when the actual number will be in there,” Klavetter explained.
The MDE (Minnesota Department of Education) always encourages certifying the maximum even on the final levy because a lot of local taxes have equalization or matching aid from the state.
The board voted to certify the maximum levy.
Other Business
Stephanie Derby and Scott Mulholland donated $25 in memory of Mike Zimmer and $50 to the music department in memory of Nathaniel Drees.
On Tuesday, September 29 and Friday, October 2 from 4:30-7:30 p.m., the school will be holding open houses to let the public see the improvements made throughout the school with the new construction project.
Klavetter will be adding information about the permanent school fund to his October newsletter, so voters can have the information as early voting has now opened.
The board approved the classified staff master agreement; this includes paraprofessionals, custodians, along with high school and elementary school administrative assistants.
The terms and conditions of employment for non-classified staff, which includes transportation drivers, food service workers, community education employees and individual department directors was approved.
