Michael “Hacksaw” Mathison, age 74, of Mabel, Minnesota, died Saturday, September 12, 2026 ,at his home.
Michael was born October 5, 1951, in Spring Grove, to Melvin and Madonna (Nelson). He graduated from the Mabel-Canton High School in 1970 where he played football and participated in track. He drove truck for Fred Carlson Company, Knife River, and Croel. Michael was a member of the Sons of the American Legion and the Mabel Sportsman’s Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and driving the country roads looking for wildlife. Hacksaw was especially proud of his 12-point Boone and Crocket buck.
Michael is survived siblings Marcia Nelson of Mabel, Mark (Diane) of Peterson, Minnesota, and Maureen Sorum of Mabel; and nieces and nephews Terri Mathison, Tammy Mathison, Dean Sorum, Daniel Mathison, and Kristen (Chad) Kelm; great-nieces and nephews Ethan Anderson, Kennedy Sorum, Trae Mathison, Reese Draper, Mylee Mathison, Adley Kelm, and Wilson Kelm; and a great-great-niece Kora Olson.
He was preceded in death by his parents Melvin and Madonna, a brother, Murrel; a niece, Deanna Sorum; a nephew, Ronald Nelson; and brothers-in-law Wayne Sorum and Stanley Nelson.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, September 19, 2026 at the Mabel First Lutheran Church in Mabel. Burial will be in the Mabel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 9-11 a.m. prior to the service at the Mabel First Lutheran Church. The Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel is assisting with arrangements.
