Averlene Marzolf, a longtime resident of Preston, passed away on July 23, 2026.
Funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Christ Lutheran Church, Preston, Minnesota, with Pastor Kris Hertsgaard-Kincaid officiating. Public visitation will be held from 12-2 p.m., on Tuesday prior to the funeral. Averlene will be buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Preston, Minnesota.
Averlene Inez Hogie was born August 12, 1935, on the Hogie family farm north of Lanesboro to Arnold and Inez (Johnson)Hogie. She attended Ludahl country school. On March 30, 1953, she married the love of her life Herman Marzolf at North Prairie Lutheran church in rural Lanesboro. He passed away January 26, 2009. She was a member of Christ Lutheran church in Preston where she belonged to Martha Circle, was a Sunday School teacher for many years, organized and helped with the church lutefisk dinners. She was also a part of Due Day. She was a lifetime member of the American legion auxiliary post, where she held several different offices, and helped coordinate fundraisers, including the Saturday night fish fries and Wednesday night pork burgers. After moving off the Marzolf family farm in 1987 she and Herman bought a house in Preston. It was then when she started working at Fillmore Central Elementary School, where she worked in the kitchen. For a short time, she was a part-time cook at Park Lane Estates.
She officially retired in 2009. She was a great cook and baker. She always had sweet treats for anyone who stopped by. Her homemade apple pie in a cake pan was the best!!! She loved watching the Twins and the Vikings, as well as watching her grandchildren play sports. She was always willing and excited to babysit any of her grandkids.
She is survived by her five sons: Erlyn (Sandy), Dave (Margo), Roger (Sandy), Kevin (Janis), Allan (Diane) all of Preston; a daughter, Julie (Paul) Ebnet of Chatfield; 11 grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and eight step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Virgil of Lanesboro; sisters Ardella (Marlin) Miner of Lanesboro, Marilyn (Dan) Seelbinder of Chatfield, Marlys Hogie Moore of Saint Charles, and Jelon Hogie of Lanesboro.
She is preceded in death by her husband Herman, her parents, and her two brothers, Ivenell and Arlyss Hogie.
