My name is Isaac Snyder. I’m from Lanesboro, Minnesota, and graduated in 2024. I am a summer intern at the Fillmore County Journal, and an upcoming junior at Iowa State University, majoring in marketing and minoring in Spanish. Being a student at Iowa State has helped prepare my business and sales skills – assets I look forward to utilizing in future careers and next spring when I study abroad in Spain. As I prepare for a future in marketing and sales, this internship provides valuable, real-world experience and a competitive start to my career.
When my dad suggested reaching out to the Fillmore County Journal for a potential summer internship, I jumped at the chance. I knew it would be a great place to work and learn, and I was very excited when the opportunity came together –especially since it meant I could live at home in Lanesboro for the summer. Since starting at the Journal this May, I have gotten a lot of hands-on experience, including working on upcoming projects, interviewing, news writing, and advertisement design.
A significant portion of my internship has involved compiling comprehensive data for our upcoming regional directories – projects that will serve as essential resources for residents and visitors. For this, I have been in contact with local schools, city officials, and regional businesses.
My time so far at the Journal has emphasized the importance of local print and digital media, especially how much readers and businesses appreciate what we do.
I have had a lot of fun learning how the newspaper is constructed. Being on the other side of the newspaper, after reading it throughout my life, has been very interesting and a lot more engaging than I expected. I’ve also enjoyed meeting people from the area, including the people I have interviewed and city officials. In addition to my responsibilities in the office, I have gotten to deliver newspapers and magazines to post offices and local businesses around Fillmore, Houston and Olmsted counties.
As I look toward a career in marketing and sales, I’m excited to gain work experience and apply what I am learning in the future. I appreciate Jason and the staff at the Journal for teaching and bridging the gaps between coursework and hands-on experience.
