Letter to Our Founders
Philadelphia, September 5, 1774. The date when you first met to start a legacy that has lasted for hundreds of years. Did you know then, during the First Continental Congress, that you set off a chain of events that led to the establishment of the United States of America? You defied one of the world’s great¬est nations at the time, some¬thing that had never been done before. Was it for freedom and independence? Or was it, per¬haps, motivated by money and social status? If you knew what you were getting into, would you have still continued? There are so many questions about you founding fathers that might not ever be answered, but if we imagine for a moment that you can read this, we have a good start.
So I ask you all today, 250 years after you declared Independence, how did you view America? Today, we see stars and stripes, words like liber-ty and opportunity, but what did you see? Did you know America would endure for so long? Everyone loves to think you were mighty, powerful, and brave, but is that completely true? You were a group of lawyers, merchants, and farmers. Common citizens who were certainly not expected to start a global commotion. Did you really have it together, or were you walking blindly, hoping for the best? Though we may not know exactly what you thought, one thing is set in stone. We have you to thank for where America is today.
