A couple pitchers from Mabel-Canton performed big feats on the week. On the baseball diamond, hosting Spring Grove, junior Kale Eiken threw the rare seven-inning no-hitter (3 BB, 11 K) in a 4-0 Cougar win. Isaac Underbakke (2-4, RBI, 2 R) accounted for three of four M-C runs. Milton Hutchinson (1-4) added an RBI. Lion pitchers Gabe Klug (5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, Loss) and Kolten Nerstad (2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K) only gave up two earned runs. Across town on the softball field, M-C senior Tylar Wenthold struck out a season-high 17 and threw a one-hitter (1 R, 1 BB; 1-3, RBI) in a 5-1 Cougar win. Sadie Tollefsrud (2-4, RBI, R) accounted for two M-C runs. SG’s sole run came from 8th grade pitcher Claire Sherburne’s solo home run (1-3, RBI, R). She took the loss (7 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 10 BB) striking out 15. M-C won its fourth in five tries. One game later, Cougar softball took out R-P 4-0. Wenthold (7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB) struck out 14 to collect the win. She went over 700 career strikeouts. Syeirra Stortz (2-4, R), Hailee Eiken (2-4, RBI), and Whitney Williams (1-2, 2 R) were M-C’s best offense, as the Cougars’ pivotal inning was a three-run fourth. Shelby Tesch (3 2/3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 8 BB, 7 K) took the loss for R-P with Morgan Rye (3 1/3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) doing relief work. M-C’s teams then each lost to Hayfield to end the week (See “Non-Conference Baseball” and “Non-Conference Softball”). Wenthold, a four-year starter on the mound, has struck out double-digits in seven straight games and nine times in 13 games this season (147 total).
