Caledonia’s head football coach, Carl Fruechte, received the 2026 John Gagliardi Legacy award on April 19 from the Minnesota Chapter of the National Football Foundation. The ceremony was held at the Huntington Bank Stadium at the University of Minnesota.

“Carl Fruechte has so much respect and admiration across the entire Minnesota High School football community. He develops athletes into not just great players, but excellent future citizens and community leaders,” said Todd Fultz, president of the Minnesota Chapter of the National Football Foundation.

When asked about receiving the award, Fruechte said he was “stunned,” emphasizing that Gagliardi is a Minnesota legend. “I remember going to clinics and listening to him on purpose.”  Fruechte added that Gagliardi was playing football before World War II and was recognized as a player coach.

Fruechte said he admired how Gagliardi approached the game differently. Rather than following traditional methods, he focused on keeping players fresh and thinking outside the box.

A 1984 graduate of Caledonia High School, Fruechte’s career at his alma mater included serving as an educational assistant for 30 years before stepping away in 2020, a position he really enjoyed. He coached football at the school since 1988, serving as head coach from 1997 to 2009 and from 2016 to the present. Between 2010 and 2015, he worked as the Warriors’ offensive coordinator while his children competed in college athletics.

His coaching career includes eight conference titles, 10 section championships, and six state championships. Overall, he has been part of 10 total championships teams as either a head coach or assistant. Fruechte has been named Conference and Section Coach of the Year eight times each, earned the Minnesota Football Coaches Association Class Coach of the Year honors three times, and was named State Coach of the Year in 2008. He was inducted into the Minnesota Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2024 and currently holds a career record of 206-46.

Despite his name being in large black letters on a white football, Fruechte emphasized that the award reflects a collective effort.

“We’ve been pretty blessed here. We’ve got great coaches, former past coaches, and players – it doesn’t matter if you’re first, second, or third string,” he said.

Fruechte describes football as a tool for something bigger. While they take the games seriously, his father taught him that high school athletics are ultimately about preparing young people for life.

The National Football Foundation’s mission stresses the importance of developing leadership, sportsmanship, competitive spirit, and academic excellence in Minnesota’s young people.

Fruechte incorporates leadership lessons into his program, even reading books aloud to his players because he believes they need to hear “good, old-fashioned reading.”

Fruechte referenced David Pollack, a University of Georgia standout and first round draft choice whose career was cut short by a neck injury. In one of his books, Pollack coined the phrase, “Do the Suck,” meaning to embrace the difficult, uncomfortable tasks. Fruechte uses that idea to stress the importance of embracing hard, often unpleasant work.

Throughout the interview, he credited his father as a major influence in his life, who stressed the importance of forgiveness, compression, and moving forward.

He also talked about himself, emphasizing that he is not perfect and has made mistakes. He noted that there has only been one person who has been perfect, and he was crucified. A good leader takes responsibility for their mistakes.

“That’s my job to work hard and then be a great example,” he said.

He also praised his staff, assistant coaches, and the school’s booster club for their support and involvement.

Fruechte said he is always proud of his team, “I always tell everybody, ‘We’ve never had a bad year, some just end sooner than others.’”

“At the end of the day, this isn’t about one coach or one person,” he said. “It’s about a whole group of people working together to make a difference.”

Fittingly, the name Fruechte is derived from German and means “grower of fruit trees.” Figuratively, it reflects the rewards of hard work, an idea that mirrors both his coaching philosophy and the lasting impact he has had on his players and community.

Later this year, the Minnesota Football Honors is hosting a show on YouTube to honor this year’s high school, college, and Minnesota Vikings award winners. Dates and times will be announced on www.minnesotafootballhonors.com.
