Kingsland School Board Taking Applications To Fill Vacancy

April 27, 2026 by Paula Barness Leave a Comment

On Monday, April 20, the Kingsland School Board received Board Chair Kyle Rader’s resignation as he will soon be moving out of the district. Rader will remain on the board until June of this year.

Superintendent Scott Klavetter explained because there are more than 90 days left of Rader’s term, there will need to be someone appointed to his seat.

“Basically there are two different options for the board to appoint. One is for the board to just throw out a name and assign somebody or you can call for applications and give people of the community time to respond,” Klavetter said. “Once that person is appointed they have to wait 30 days before they can take office. There has to be time for the community to give feedback.”

The board voted to solicit applications from members of the community.

Applications will be due by Friday, May 8. The board will appoint the new member at their Monday, May 18 meeting.

Cindy Seabright will take over as board chair, Brady Wolfgram will become vice chair and Ann Oeltjen will take over negotiations.

Decades Project

The time is nearing for the traditional Kingsland sophomores right of passage. The board heard from Social Studies teacher Richard Kemper and sophomore Hunter Hyde about the upcoming Decades project. This year’s theme is toys and games from the 1930s through the 1980s.

“We are doing the Decades project, those of you who remember Mr. Mulholland, a couple of years ago he started this project. This is the 11th year, but it will be the 10th time we will be presenting a Decades Day,” Kemper explained.

Kemper explained Hyde is one of the chief managers of the project, there are also decorating managers and entertainment managers.

“Its a lot of research and writing about things that happened in your decade. You kind of feel like an expert in your group about certain topics for that decade,” Hyde said.

“So far we’ve had a lot of success with it,” Kemper said of the event.

The community will be able to view the project and an accompanying program on Thursday, May 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. with an evening performance from 6:15-8 p.m.

Financial Report

Klavetter gave a brief update on the district’s financials as they are now through 75% of the fiscal year.

“We have 74% of our revenues in so we are right on track there. Federal is actually a little behind and that is because most of the federal programs are reimbursement programs. For expenditures we are tracking similar to two years ago, but behind from a few years ago. A couple of things that lead to that. The one that most significantly low is because of the changes to the health insurance program. The budgeted costs came down a little bit,” Klavetter explained.

The district traditionally tends to budget high so there is more leeway if a “worst case scenario” happens, according to Klavetter.

Other Business

The board thanked Ashley and Eric Braun, of Valley Lanes, for their $1,000 donation for a scholarship in memory of Doug Bergey.

Klavetter shared construction is expected to begin in May, so there will be barriers up around the construction zone. Parking may also be affected.

The strategic planning meetings began on Wednesday, May 22. The committee is comprised of board members, staff, students and community members. There will be three meetings with all the groups then in June the board will review the information and proceed as necessary.
