In a meet well represented by Section 1 teams, but not held at one solitary locale like usual, one ‘Journal 11’ conglomerate lived the dream of becoming state champion. Four others competed, three doing very well. The 2021 Class A State True Team Track and Field meet was tabulated virtually, races being run at multiple locales. Boys and girls teams from GMLOKS and LFCMC ran and were scored at an invite in Elgin. Chatfield’s girls ran and were scored at an invite in Lake City. The biggest winners were the GMLOKS girls, coached by Aaron Thauwald. The last time a State True Team Meet occurred (2019), they took third with Minnewaska Area taking first. This year, GMLOKS (607.5) bested Minnewaska (565.5) for the Class A state title. LFCMC’s girls (489.5), coached by Lori Anderson, took third while Chatfield (359), coached by Jeff DeBuhr, finished 11th (of 12 teams). GMLOKS was led by Anika Reiland (1st 100 > 12.91, 1st 200 > 26.37, 4th 400, 4th Long Jump) and Hailey Hindt (1st 300-hurdles > 46.58, 2nd 100-hurdles > 16.49, 2nd Triple Jump > 33’4”), who’ve each been super good all year. Hindt was also part of the first place 4×200 with Ellie Buchholtz, Anna Oehlke, and Chantle Reiland (1:50.49). Lexy Foster won an event (Shot Put > 35’1 ¼”) and had two top ten’s (7th Discus). Adding top five finishes were Shelby Beck (2nd-tie Pole Vault > 9’0”), the 4×400 (2nd 4:16.74 > Beck, McKenna Hendrickson, Kendyl Queensland, Kaylin Mensink), Hendrickson (3rd 800), Madison Hindt (3rd 100-H), and Lauren Queensland (4th 3,200, 6th-tie High Jump). Kendyl Queensland (6th-tie H-Jump, 7th 800) had two top seven’s. Leading third place LFCMC was Brielle Ruen (1st 400 > 59.51, 3rd 200, 4th 100), who had the team’s only first place. The 4×200 (Jersey Ristau, Aubrey Daniels, Morgan Pickett, Macayla Brogle) took third. Brogle (6th-tie 200, 8th 400), Lynsey Ruen (4th 300-H, 9th 100-H), Lillyan Kiehne (5th 1,600, 6th 800), and Sydney Taylor (5th Discus, 10th Shot) each had two top ten’s. Madison Simon and Addie Miner tied for second (P-Vault 9’0”). Kyla Hellickson (3rd-tie H-Jump), Sahara Morken (6th 3,200), and Kelly Ristau (6th-tie H-Jump) finished top six. Chatfield’s top athletes were Aletta Strande (2nd 3,200 > 12:34.25), Zayda Priebe (2nd Discus >107’4”), and the 4×100 (2nd 53.32 > Rylee Burnett, Evy Goldsmith, Chloe Berg, Lauren Cole). Preibe added a sixth (Shot Put). Joanna Salerno (8th 100-H, 9th 300-H) had two top tens. It was Chatfield’s girls’ first State True Team Meet since 2001. They were down a top 1A True Team Meet athlete Jaelyn LaPlante. On the guy’s side, the top three teams were all from Section 1. Pine Island (550) bested LFCMC (525.5) and GMLOKS (473.5) at the top of the heap. The runner-up Burros, coached by Alex Aiken, were led by Carson Kiehne’s two first place finishes (100 > 11.24, 400 > 51.59). He did so despite coming up lame in the 400. Brother Jayce Kiehne (2nd 800 > 2:00.72, 3rd-tie H-Jump) had two individual top threes. The 4×800 (Mason Howard, Isaac Snyder, Luke Ruen, J-Kiehne) took third while the 4×200 (Will Harvey, Carter Clarke, Jake Gathje, J.T. Rein) tied for third. Carson Ruen (3rd 3,200, 4th 1,600) had two top fours. Harvey (5th 300-H, 6th 110-H) and Rein (4th 300-H, 6th 200) had two top sixes. Will Semmen (4th Discus), Jacob Peterson (4th Discus), and Gathje (5th-tie P-Vault) added top fives. LFCMC was down senior Ben Snyder (injury). GMLOKS, coached by R-P grad Austin O’Hare, was led by Riley Paul (1st Shot > 49’9 ¼”, 1st Discus > 139’9”) and Garrison Hubka (2nd 1,600 > 4:41.21, 2nd 3,200 > 10:24.06). Hubka was twice topped by Greenway/Nashwauk/Keewatin’s Geno Urhbom, the 2019 Class A Cross Country State Champion. A trio of relay teams also finished first or second. The 4×100 (Ethan Imm, Luke Speer, Blake Ludemann, James Howard) and 4×200 (Jacob Kerrins, Jack Bruggeman, Ludemann, Speer) won races (45:06 and 1:34.78), while the 4×400 (Kerrins, Howard, Ludemann, Bruggeman) was runner-up (3:34.31). Kerrins (2nd Long Jump > 20’4”, 5th 400) and Howard (5th 200) added high individual finishes. Christian Luthe (5th Discus, 6th Shot) joined Paul in scoring well in the throws. It was the first ever State True Team qualification for GMLOKS boys or any of its individual schools’ boy’s programs.
Berg and Company Drive to Post-Season
For the first time in many years, Chatfield softball heads to the post-season devoid of being the TRC West champions. But they head there with an excellent record and having won their last three games. Jerry Chase’s group began the week beating Rochester-Lourdes 10-0 in five innings. The score was 3-0 after three, but Chatfield scored seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Peyton Berg (2-3, HR, 4 RBI, R) led the charge, hitting her seventh home run (three-run shot) and driving in four runs. Sydney Allen (2-4, HR, 3 RBI, R) also went yard, her second. Jaiden Zimmerman (2-3, 2 R, 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, Win), Claire Springer (2-3, 2B, RBI, 2 R, 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K), and Devann Clemens (2-3, 2 R) also had multiple hits. Zimmerman and Springer combined for a one-hitter. Team Chatfield then hosted W-K in a doubleheader to wrap up the regular season. Chatfield had 14 hits and the Falcons 10 in game one. The Gophers never trailed, getting two in the first. But W-K tied it in the fourth (2-2) and closed to within one in the fifth (5-4). A four-run Chatfield bottom of the inning, all runs coming with two out, made it 9-4 Gophers. Chatfield prevailed 10-5. Tatum Allen (2-4, two 2Bs, RBI, 2 R), Clemens (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R), Alexis Hinckley (3-4, 2B, RBI, 2 R), and Springer (1-2, 2B, 2 R) allowed the Gophers to rack up five doubles. W-K had four doubles. Berg (1-3, 2 RBI), S-Allen (2-4, RBI), and Kennedie Schmaltz (2-3, RBI, R) also drove in runs for Chatfield. Zimmerman (4 1/3 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 7 K) collected the win, though Springer (2 2/3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) gave up just one run. Game two wasn’t as offensive. The teams combined for 11 hits. Chatfield used a four-run fifth to break a 0-0 tie. They prevailed 5-1. Berg (2-4, 3 RBI) authored her eighth multiple-RBI game, her fourth in five games. Zimmerman (3-4, 2B, RBI) added three hits. T-Allen and Springer were each 1-for-3 with a run scored. Springer (7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K) collected the win. Seniors Drive Chatfield Baseball to Win Streak
A year after seniors didn’t get a senior year of spring sports, Chatfield’s baseball seniors are partaking in a memorable year. Led by its graduates, Brian Baum’s crew went 3-0 the last week of the regular season. They’ll head to the post-season on their longest win-steak of the season, six games. The Gophers started by downing Kenyon-Wanamingo 4-1 on Monday. Chatfield scored one in the first, two in the third, and one more in the fifth. Gopher hurlers, seniors Ben Fretland (5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, Win) and Seth Goetzinger (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K), combined to give up just one run. Goetzinger also had two hits (2-3, 3 R) and scored three of Chatfield’s four runs. Fellow seniors Caden Nolte (1-3, 2B, 2 RBI) and Henry Gathje (1-2, 2 RBI) drove in all four of the Gophers runs. Connor Jax (1-3, R) scored the fourth run. Austin Koenigs (2-3) and Luke Carrier (2-4) each had two hits. Chatfield then trekked to Wabasha for a doubleheader. The Gophers got all up on the Falcons in game one, scoring six in the first. They put up at least one run in every inning in posting a 12-2 victory in five. Seniors Goetzinger (3-4, 2B, RBI, 2 R), Nolte (2-3, two 2B, RBI), Gathje (2-3, RBI), and Fretland (2-4, 2 RBI, 2 R) all had multiple hits. Tate Karver (1-3, RBI, 2 R), Corey Ericson (1-2, 2 RBI), and Jax (1-3, RBI, R) helped out. Nolte (5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K) collected the win. In game two, the teams combined to score six runs. Neither plated multiple guys in an inning. Breaking a 1-1 tie, Chatfield put up one run each in the third and fourth innings to lead 3-1. W-K closed to down 3-2 after 5 1/2, but the Gophers replied in the bottom of the fifth to lead 4-2 (Drew O’Connor RBI-double). And 4-2 was the final. Goetzinger (6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K) picked up the win. Drew Schindler (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K) picked up the save. Chatfield got one RBI each from O’Connor (1-2, 2B, R), Carrier (1-4, R), Gathje (0-2), and Karver (0-3). Nolte (2-3), Fretland (2-4), and Jax (2-3) had multiple hits. Warrior Baseball Scores Three TDs, Wins TRC-East
There are crooked numbers and then there is a football score. Caledonia baseball ended the regular season with the latter. Hosting Dover-Eyota, the Warriors put three TDs and PATs up in a 21-0 win. It was ‘B.P.’ for the Warriors, including in an 11-run third inning. Jake Staggemeyer was 5-for-5 (2B, 2 RBI, 4 R) to lead the charge. Casey Schultz (3-5, 3B, 4 RBI, 3 R) and Andrew Kunelius (3-4, 2B, 3B, 4 RBI, 2 R) each had three hits, four RBIs. Devin Vonderohe (2-4, RBI, 2 R) and Sam Privet (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI) also had multiple knocks. Austin Klug (1-3, 2B, 3 RBI, 4 R), Tucker Ginther (1-2, 2 RBI, R), Brady Augedahl (1-3, RBI, R), and Gabe Morey (1-1, 2B, RBI, R) joined in on the onslaught. Making matters worse for D-E, Thane Meiners (3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K) and Schultz (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K) combined for a perfect game (15-up, 15-down). The Eagles also had seven errors. It was the fifth game in six Warrior pitching and defense has yielded zero runs. Home Plate Gets Wore Out in Houston
Caledonia beating D-E 21-0 was one football score in a baseball game. But Mabel-Canton at Houston took the cake. The Cougars beat the Hurricanes 27-16 in six innings! Karl Urbaniak’s Cougars scored 15 runs in the second alone to build a seemingly safe 17-0 lead. A Randy Gerard grand slam was the highlight. But Jason Carrier’s Hurricanes scored four in the second and eight in the third to make it closer, 17-12. Down five was as close as team double-H got. M-C scored ten more runs, Houston four. The teams combined for 25 walks, six errors, and six hit batters. Gerard had the biggest day for M-C (3-5, 2B, GS-HR, 6 RBI, 5 R). Jaymeson Tollefsrud (4-4, 2B, 3 RBI, 5 R) and Robert Michels (4-4, 2 RBI, 4 R) were perfect at the plate. Jack Arneson (2-5, 4 RBI, 3 R), Jordan Larson (2-5, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R), and Colton Heintz-Kuderer (2-6, 2 R) also had multiple hits. Tyler Larson (1-3, 3 RBI, 2 R), Alex Arneson (0-5, 2 RBI, 2 R), and Cayden Tollefsrud (0-3, 3 RBI, 2 R) gave M-C eight guys with multiple RBI’s. A-Arneson (3 2/3 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 1 K) collected the win. Landon Carrier (3-4, 2 RBI, 2 R) was the only Hurricane with multiple hits. Caiden Olson (1-3, 3 RBI, R), Arik Melbo (1-3, 2 RBI, 2 R), Ethan Kinstler (1-2, RBI, 3 R), Jordan Beeman (1-2, 2 RBI, 2 R), Kameron Morgan (2-4, 2 RBI, R), and Kenny Grupe (0-1, 2 RBI, 2 R) got in on Houston’s offense. Lions Walk-Off Versus Falcons
FC/L baseball got off to a great start versus Spring Grove, but it was the Lions ending things for a walk-off win. The Falcons scored four runs in the first frame, highlighted by an RBI-double from Stephan Schultz. It was the only extra-base hit of the game. But three of five Falcon hits came in that opening frame. FC/L led 4-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh, where SG scored three runs for the win. Caleb Griffin plated the tying run on a passed ball. Matthew Doering scored the game-winner by beating a throw to the plate on a ground ball. The Lions never tied or led until those two plays. SG out-hit FC/L 9 to 5, but left eight runners on base, while the Falcons stranded four. Caleb Griffin (2-2, 2 R), Brandon Jahnke (2-4, RBI, R), and Ezra Griffin (2-3, RBI) had multiple hits for the Lions. Nathan Solberg (1-4, R) and Jaxon Strinmoen (1-4, RBI) also contributed to the scoring cause. Isaac Griffin (7 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K) collected the win. M-C softball beat R-P 8-2 and Houston 16-7 to end the season with two wins. Kenidi McCabe was 5-for-5 and hit her sixth home run versus the ‘Canes. Lily Hughes struck out 10 in just four innings as GMLOK softball beat L/P 15-0. R-P baseball ended the year winning non-conference tilts with Mabel-Canton (14-7) and Houston (12-2 in five).
