Roy Aloyisus Montgomery, 83, of Plainview, passed away at his home on Wednesday evening, December 23, 2020. He was born on October 17, 1937, in Elba, Minn., to Rollie and Rose (Walcheck) Montgomery. The family later moved to Plainview where Roy attended school and was a standout star player on both the high school basketball and football teams. Roy graduated from Plainview High School in 1955. On June 15, 1957, he married Jean Marie Senst at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Chatfield. They resided most of their married life in Plainview, raising their family of five children. His beloved wife Jean of 45 years passed away on November 8, 2002.
Roy attended Reisch Worldwide Auctioneering School in 1966, in Mason City, Iowa, and later taught real estate auctioneering at the school. He also went to Real Estate School and received his license which he maintained until his death. Mr. Montgomery founded Roy Montgomery Auction & Realty of Plainview, which he owned and operated for well over 50 years. Throughout the last decade, he continued to sell thousands of acres of real estate through Montgomery-Holst Realty; he remained active in real estate right up until his death.
Roy had many interests, which included fishing and hunting; he especially loved deer hunting (and telling grand deer hunting stories), fishing trips to northern Minnesota with his family, attending and watching horse racing, and most of all, spending time with family and grandchildren. He enjoyed spending cold Minnesota winters vacationing in Port Aransas, Tex., ocean fishing, and more recently at Hot Springs, Ark., where he could attend the horse races.
A son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will always be remembered for his quick sense of humor, grand storytelling, generosity, and his impeccable timing.
Roy was preceded in death by his wife Jean, his parents Rollie and Rose, his father-in-law and mother-in-law Al and Josephine Senst, three sisters, one brother, and four brothers-in-law.
He is survived by his special companion of the last 18 years, Marge Holst; his two daughters, Robin (Jay) Holst and Shelly (Dan Scholler) Schad-Scholler of Plainview; three sons: Rollie Montgomery of Rochester, Nick Montgomery and Tony (Stacy) Montgomery, both of Plainview; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way; his brother Donny (Carol) Montgomery, his sister Janice (Jerry) Gagner, and many nephews and nieces.
A private funeral Mass will be held at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Plainview, with Father William Becker officiating. Burial will be in St. Joachim’s Catholic Cemetery in Plainview.
