Lark Football Downs Houston, Stays Perfect at 5-0

November 16, 2020 by Paul Trende

Through the first four weeks of the season, GM football overcame obstacle after obstacle.  They beat the defending state champions.  They beat a couple rivals.  They beat a fellow state ranked team.  Gary Sloan’s group hurdled Mountain Lake, Spring Grove, LeRoy-Ostrander, and Southland to stay unbeaten.  Their week five opponent also was of significance.  GM trekked to Houston for a re-match of last year’s 9-Man Section 1 Final.   Hurricane junior Isaac Heyer scored on a 69-yard TD run to open the scoring.  Dusty Copley than matched the score courtesy of a 66-yard TD run.  After one quarter, Houston led 8-7.  GM then out-scored the ‘Canes 49-0 over the final three quarters for a 56-8 win. The Larks churned out 298 rushing yards and 403 yards total offense.  Copley (12-112 yards, 3 TDs rushing, 14-yard TD reception) scored four times.  Daniel Smith (15-83, 2 TDs rushing) and Evan Oehlke (7-48, TD rushing, 5-8, 91 yards, TD passing) authored two scores.  Taylor Glynn had a pass (14 yards), a rush (12 yards), and two receptions (43 yards) of double digit yards.  Corbin Ludemann added a 26-yard TD run.  Heyer (12-117, TD rushing) led Houston with his fourth straight 100-yard rushing game.  He has 742 yards rushing in five games.  The Hurricanes didn’t complete a pass.  GM won the turnover battle 3 to 0 (three fumbles), making them +13 on the season (plus multiple blocked punts).  Their defense has allowed just three TDs (25 total points) thru 20 quarters of action.  Gary Sloan’s Larks improved to 5-0.  Cody Hungerholt’s Hurricanes fall to 2-3.
