Ten-year-old John Schieber from Caledonia performed in the 3,400 seat Minneapolis Convention Center on Saturday, June 1, after qualifiying for the 2024 Minnesota Music Teachers state piano honors concert. The concert is a piano symphony consisting of students performing four-hand music on 20 grand pianos in groups of up to 40 students at a time under the direction of the conductor. The young musician traveled to the Twin Cities for rehearsals in preparation for the event.
John is among the more than 500 students to earn the privilege of taking part in the association’s 87th annual concert after scoring in the top one-third of all contestants after two rounds of competition. The fifth grade student competed in the final round of competition in March in the Twin Cities and he competed in the preliminary round virtually in January. The contests consist of students competing in age groups and performing memorized pieces before music critics. John is the son of Bobby and Kim Schieber and a student of Rose Weichert, all of Caledonia.
