Warrior soccer boys are experienced front to back

August 31, 2021 by Lee Epps

Caledonia/Spring Grove/Houston boys soccer brings back most of last year’s 3-9-1 team for second-season head coach Craig Hahn and assistant Jay Marschall. Only four Warriors graduated, so 10 of the 14-player rotation return, including all-conference, three-year starting goalkeeper Austin Allen. Each position group – forwards, midfielders and defenders – lost only one starter each.

Junior goalkeeper August Allen will again be a defensive force for Caledonia/Spring Grove/Houston. The all-conference standout is shown here last year against section champion Cotter.

All-conference forward/midfielder Austin Meyer is one of seven seniors, six of which with starting experience: Meyer plus defenders Andrew Klinski, Jonah Udstuen and Thomas Bechtel along with midfielders Eric Myhre and Gabe Morey in addition to newcomer Owen Zahn. Also back with starting credentials are juniors Allen, defender Evan Hawkins and midfielder/forward Lyle Myhre plus freshman William Hahn.

Returning with mostly junior varsity experience are juniors Tristan Augedahl, Riley Aasum and Noah Stigeler plus sophomores Laurent Stigeler, Caleb Ranzenberger, Alijah Marshall, Sean McCormick, Vincent Colsch and Troy Zibrowski.

Numbers are strong with 34 candidates in grades 7 through 12, including freshmen Jacob Hernandez, John O’Heron, Preston Kuennen, Colton DeWall, Landon Meyer, Zander Thorson and Grayson Staggemeyer plus a pair of eighth graders – Jackson Moen and Landon O’Heron and a quintet of seventh graders – Alexander Vick, Anthony Hahn, Thomas Schroeder, Ayden Marschall and Merrick Allen.

Hahn expects to again employ a primary 14-player rotation in a 4-4-2 formation. He seeks to build on the progress he saw the Warriors achieve last fall when they pulled off a first-round playoff upset.

Minnesota is now organizing soccer into three classes (instead of two). C/SG/H remains in Class A, and Section 1A goes from 18 teams down to 10.

The scheduled Aug. 28 opener, due to field conditions, was postponed to Sept. 18. The Aug. 31 game at Coulee Christian was canceled. The boys will now open on Sept. 2 at Plainview-Elgin-Millville.
