David Frank was appointed to fill the vacant Chatfield City Council seat at the council’s July 26 meeting.
Mayor Russ Smith noted that only one application had been submitted to the fill the remainder of John McBroom’s term, who announced his resignation on June 28. Frank will also fill most of McBroom’s committee commitments (Park & Recreation, Public Services, and Community Education Board).
The vacancy was reported in both the Chatfield News and the Fillmore County Journal and it was also posted on the city’s website. Frank has previously served as a councilor for eight years. Frank’s appointment will be effective when he is administered the oath of office. He will fill the position until a successor is seated after the general election to be held November 2024.
Other business in brief
•A revised plan submitted by Jac’s Bar & Grill to extend their liquor license to include their back property during Western Days (August 12-15) was approved. It will also include the closure of a portion of the public sidewalk and a small portion of Second Street. Councilor Mike Urban noted the revised plan is what was discussed at the last meeting.
•Approval was given for the use of Mill Creek Park for a KUBB tournament (a Swedish lawn game described as a combination of bowling and horseshoes), to be sponsored by the Chatfield Alliance and hosted by PawPrint Brewery, October 23. This will include the authority for a licensed food vendor or vendors.
•The second consideration of Ordinance 454 Lodging Tax was approved. Approval was then given for the publication of a summary of the ordinance.
•A resolution was approved allowing temporary storage at 405 South Main St. The permit will allow storage on the back side of the Center for the Arts to store furniture and other contents of the building that need to be stored away during construction. A semi-trailer will be used for the temporary storage from August 1 through September 30, 2022.
•Councilor Josh Broadwater reported on the Park and Recreation Committee. Among issues discussed was the length of time the pool will stay open and pool hours in the coming month (through August 29). The purchase of an additional back-up pump for the pool at a cost of $6,960 was discussed. This would be a spare; the pool requires two circulation pumps to remain open. The pool heater replacement will be discussed at the next council meeting.
Dumping in the sewer at Shady Oak Park by non-paying campers was discussed. It was decided to keep it locked as dumping is not a city service. Dumping in large amounts has resulted in the sewer being plugged up. This required someone to be hired to clean it out.
