In the early days of April 2022, the Association of Community Publishers held their annual conference in Nashville, Tenn.
During the annual conference, ACP coordinated a “Best of the Best” contest in the publishing industry. There were more than 1,000 contest entries in over 100 categories.
The Fillmore County Journal team earned a total of 10 of awards in the following categories.
1.First Place: Grocery & Liquor – Multi-Page Ad; Judge’s comments: “Large graphics and easy to read!”
2.First Place: Community Service; Judge’s comments: “Excellent teacher and education promotion – 12 pages! The form makes it easy, and it has wonderful community support!”
3.First Place: Self Promotion – Awards; Judge’s comments: “An excellent reminder that good employees can result in great awards.”
4.First Place: Classified Layout; Judge’s comments: “Nice use of headings.”
5.First Place: Banner Or Nameplate; Judge’s comments: “Eye catching with a lot of information!”
6.Second Place: Special In-Paper Promotion or Special Section – Insert Included Separately Within a Full Run
7.Second Place: Contests
8.Second Place: Most Improved Publication
9.Third Place: Andrew E. Shapiro Cancer Awareness Promotion
10.Third Place: Best Front Page – Special Section – Glossy
Over the past five years, the team at the Fillmore County Journal has been recognized with a total of 169 awards in the areas of editorial content, layout, advertising design, and digital presence from three organizations: Minnesota Newspaper Association, Midwest Free Community Publications, and Association of Community Publishers.

Your banner says where local news comes first but there’s not a single award for a news story. With 12 newspapers rolled into one you couldn’t do one award winning story.

Thanks for sharing your observations, Anonymous. I’m not sure where you have concluded that the Fillmore County Journal is 12 newspapers rolled into one. It sounds like you have received some misinformation from someone.
Yes, “Where Local News Comes First” is on the nameplate of our front page. That’s why we cover 18 city councils, eight school boards, two county boards, and local sports for 11 school districts. And, that’s why you’ll see 100% local human interest stories in our newspaper. We are all about local news, cover to cover.
The Association of Community Publishers happens to be heavy on advertising awards, unlike two other organizations in which we have received awards in 2022.
Here are some links for your ready-reference. You’ll see multiple awards for news coverage. And, whenever you see a special section award, that relates to the collaborative content of advertising, editorial and presentation of content. So, news is part of any special section we publish.
