A familiar phrase this time of year is “April showers bring May flowers,” and nowhere is that more true than at Heartland Blooms-n-Berry Farm. On Friday, May 10, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Schuldt family invites the public to visit their farm during the second annual Tulip Festival, held on their scenic farm conveniently located on Highway 76 between Caledonia and Eitzen.

The farm, owned by Kristi and Kevin Schuldt along with their children Henry and Emma, is a third-generation family farm with deep roots and a fresh, flower-filled future. The couple purchased the farm from Kevin’s parents when they were ready to retire, relocating to Caledonia from Illinois and beginning their own chapter in family farming.

Kevin grew up on the farm and now manages it full time while raising their children. Kristi, who works remotely for an environmental consulting firm, calls flower farming her “stress relief.” The couple met through their work in environmental remediation – Kristi’s company designed the cleanup projects that Kevin helped carry out with J.F. Brennan, where he worked as a heavy equipment operator.

The farm was originally purchased by Kevin’s grandfather, who built some of the barns by himself. Then Kevin’s parents purchased the farm and built the house Kevin and Kristi and family live in. Although most of the original farm buildings are gone, one historic corn crib still stands and now serves as a charming centerpiece with plans for future use. The Schuldts lease out their crop fields. They have approximately one acre of flowers not counting the pathways and perennials. A drip irrigation system helps conserve water. Kevin explained that they try to catch most of the rainwater because rainwater works the best. “It’s a big experiment here,” smiled Kristi.

It started with Kevin, who was raised on the farm, and Kristi, who developed a love for growing flowers while visiting her grandfather during the summers. Together, the couple is dedicated to using environmentally safe practices on their farm. As they put it on their website, “We are committed to growing our plants in a sustainable manner that improves the soil’s health, provides a sanctuary for pollinators, and makes our blooms and berries safe for your table.”

As the farm grows, so do the Schuldt children, Henry and Emma, who are becoming increasingly involved in the family business. Their evolving role is part of what makes Heartland Blooms-n-Berry a special place rooted in family tradition, community connection, and a passion for flowers.

Although the farm no longer houses livestock – aside from a friendly dog and a few cats – it offers a peaceful escape, even with its location along Highway 76. Early mornings are an especially tranquil time to visit, perfect for a quiet stroll among the vibrant flower beds. It is also an ideal moment to snap photos or take a selfie or two and select blooms for a custom bouquet – or choose from a variety of pre-arranged options ready to take home or to gift. Visitors are encouraged to sign up for a flower subscription to enjoy fresh, local flowers all season long.

The family also hosts a sunflower festival in the fall, offer hands-on flower arranging classes, and work closely with the local Caledonia flower shop to provide custom arrangements for weddings and events. DIY flower buckets, subscriptions, and full wedding floral services are also available.

Fresh-cut flowers are available throughout the week at the self-serve farm stand located at the end of the driveway. Operated on the honor system, the stand is a true reflection of Minnesota nice.

There’s a reason the word berries is part of the farm’s name; Kristi is a blueberry enthusiast. The couple planted 300 plants in the first year of operation. The farm also features a cherished patch of blackberries that Kevin’s father has been picking since childhood. Meanwhile, nine raspberry plants have grown to three full rows, producing sweet berries throughout the summer. To stay updated on harvest times, be sure to sign up for the couple’s couple’s berry email list.
