The Grand Meadow girls remained tied atop the West Division standings after completing a season sweep of visiting Spring Grove, 45-20, on Jan. 11. The Superlarks (9-1, 6-0 SEC) led only 8-7 after 12 minutes of action when their offense kicked in on the way to an 18-9 halftime lead. The Lion attack never kicked in and finished with only 20 points and frosty 15% shooting, both season-low numbers.
Bright spots for Spring Grove (5-6, 3-4 SEC) included only 6 team fouls, the 10-rebound effort from Kendal VanMinsel and Siri Konkel passing out 4 assists with only one 1 turnover. Kylie Hammel scored 10 points, half of the team’s 20.
The Lions were unsuccessful in penetrating the Superlark defense and hit only 2 of 19 from 3-point land. Grand Meadow went 5 for 18 with trey attempts and got the ball inside for 15 points and scored another 15 on fast breaks to outscore SG, 30-12, in the lane.
Only four players scored for each team. For the Larks, First Team All-SEC sisters, senior Kendyl Queensland and sophomore Lauren Queensland, each scored 12 points while junior Lexy Foster had a 10-point, 13-rebound double-double. Honorable Mention all-conference Sydney Cotton contributed 10 points and 6 assists.
Including a 51-34 win earlier this season, Grand Meadow has now won the last 12 games versus Spring Grove. However, the Lions still have the edge all-time, 36 wins to 33. The Lion B-team (4-6) dropped a second close game to GM this season, this time 27-24. The Superlarks won the seventh grade game, 29-16.
