The Caledonia/Spring Grove 4×200-meter relay boys claimed their first win of the 2022 season, while Chris Pieper won his fourth high jump competition in four attempts, both wins last week while clearing 6-feet even. That relay quartet, with their best time to date of one minute, 37.5 seconds, featured freshman Fischer Wait, sophomore Josh Beardmore, junior Eric Mauss and senior Reid Bjerke at an April 26 meet at Rushford.

On Friday, April 29, at the Vern Herman Invitation at the Plainview-Elgin-Millville track, Wait ran fourth among 30 runners at 400 meters (53.78). Among 32 sprinters in the 200M dash, Holland ran sixth (25.48) and sophomore Landon Frauenkron seventh (25.69). Among 27 long jumpers, Ethan Stendel earned eighth-place team points with a leap of 18 feet, 3 inches.
Those 4x200M boys, who won on Tuesday, did not have an opportunity for a repeat on Friday at P-E-M, where the 4x200M was a novelty co-ed event. Mauss and Bjerke teamed up with Kloe Jore and Ayshia Gay to run sixth among 10 co-ed squads. Those two girls plus Loisah Gay and Charlese Walk made up the girls 4x100M relay team that ran third on Tuesday (56.0) and seventh on Friday (57.56).
Back on Tuesday at Rushford, the Cal/SG boys actually had two of the three best 4x200M times, Besides the winning quartet, another Warrior foursome – freshman Eli Staggemeyer, freshman Tristan Meyer, sophomore Mason Foellmi and junior Bronson Knutson – had the third best time among seven teams (1:45.2).
In the 4x100M relay on Tuesday, Mauss, Beardmore, Wait and Holland finished second (46.09 seconds). In that event on Friday, Mauss, Beardmore and Wait were joined by Bjerke to place third among eight teams (47.42).
On Tuesday, the 4x400M boys – Pieper, sophomore Jason Schock, junior Lyle Myhre and junior Alec Weinbender – placed fourth at 4:10.7. On Friday, the time was better (season-best 3:59.14) but not the finish (7th) for Pieper, Myhre, Wait and Beardmore.
Pieper earned team points in three events on Tuesday – in addition to the fourth-place 4×400 relay and the high jump win, Pieper placed sixth among 31 discus athletes at 107 feet, 4 inches. Garret Ness had a sixth-place shot put among 32 throwers on Tuesday, and Jonah Dvorak had a sixth-place shot put among 35 entrants on Friday.
Uncomfortable weather again added to the challenge. After competing with temperatures in the 40s on Tuesday, the athletes had to contend with cold rain and brisk winds on Friday.
While the Warrior boys are a major factor in sprinting events, both the boys and the girls have not challenged significantly for team honors overall due to competing in so few events. The Cal/SG girls had competitors in only five of the 19 events at Plainview-Elgin-Millville and the boys in only 10 events. Among the seven teams at Rushford on Tuesday, the Warrior boys finished at fifth and the girls seventh. Among 10 teams on Friday, the Cal/SG boys were ninth and the girls were 10th. The top six places earned team points at Rushford as did the top eight at P-E-M.
