Measles cases in Minnesota hit highest total in 36 years

Health officials advise getting vaccinated for maximum protection

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) today reported that the number of measles cases in Minnesota for 2026 has reached a total of 80 cases — the most the state has seen in a single year since 1990. Health officials are stressing that now is the time for people to check their vaccination status and make sure they are up to date.

All but two of the 2026 cases have been among people who had not received two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, and most of them (71%) have been children (under 18 years old).

“The measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is well-tested, highly effective and provides long-lasting protection,” said Minnesota Commissioner of Health Dr. Brooke Cunningham. “We strongly advise anyone who is recommended to receive the MMR vaccine and has not been vaccinated to contact their healthcare provider and get vaccinated now.”

While most people who get measles recover, the disease can cause lifelong complications or even death. With more than 4,500 measles cases reported in the U.S. so far this year, it is now more important than ever to get vaccinated to prevent these serious risks.

Over the past year, MDH has identified several clusters of measles cases stemming from people who traveled within the United States. There is a historic amount of measles circulating in the U.S. currently, so health officials expect Minnesota to see more cases in the coming weeks and months. Measles is extremely contagious and a single introduction into a community with low vaccination coverage can quickly lead to outbreaks.

Vaccination rates dropped during the COVID-19 pandemic and have not rebounded to prior levels. This leaves many people, especially children, vulnerable. Vaccination protects you and your family, and it helps protect those who can’t get vaccinated because they are too young, are pregnant, or have certain medical conditions.

MDH encourages people to check their immunization records to confirm that they and their children have received the MMR vaccine. Anyone who has questions about the MMR vaccine is encouraged to talk to their healthcare provider. For those who want to get vaccinated, contact your regular healthcare provider. If you do not have a regular provider, other options include local health departments or community health boards, pharmacies or retail locations.
