Kingsland Students Celebrate Homecoming by Giving Back

October 26, 2026 by Paula Barness Leave a Comment

On Monday, October 19, 2026, the Kingsland School Board heard about the ways the district’s students gave back to the community recently.

“Amongst many of the homecoming activities, we had our Third Annual Community Service Day with our 7-12 grade students. It is a very cool activity that the high school staff started a few years ago with the kids that has become a very popular activity,” Superintendent Scott Klavetter said.

Each of the grades performs a different task within the community. Teachers Martin Moore and Morgan Jacobson shared their experiences with the board.

Jacobson and the seniors started their day at the Preston Veteran’s Home where they decorated the facility for Fall and Halloween. The students then spent time doing arts and craft projects, and playing games with the residents

“They are great kids, so it was easy making a fun day out of it,” Jacobson expressed.

Moore shared the ninth graders went to Iron Wood Springs where they painted, spread gravel, cleared burdock, cleared rocks from the pastures, cleaned flood debris and helped with the demo and remodeling of buildings on the property.

Students also visited Good Earth Village and Spring Valley Living.

Klavetter thanked all the staff that helped make the day run smoothly for each grade, as well as all the places that hosted the students for the community service day.

“A lot of work goes into it on their end to prepare for the kids to come out and we appreciate that,” Klavetter said. “In three years it’s turned into something that has become, I think, a staple part of homecoming week that everyone looks forward to.”

Comprehensive Achievement and Civic Report

The board reviewed the Comprehensive Achievement and Civic Report, which details various goals set by the district based on standardized test assessments from spring of 2026.

The first goal was to have all 4-year-old preschool students achieve 80% kindergarten readiness on 60 skills sets. The school surpassed this with 100 percent readiness.

The second goal was to have students eligible for educational benefits to be equal or greater to all Kingsland students on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) for math and reading. Unfortunately, this goal was not met, as the math results showed, when averaged, students at 48.7% and reading results showed students at 52.3%.

The third goal was to have all Kingsland High School students achieve 70% proficiency assessments for mathematics and reading. The spring math MCA results showed the percentage to be 38.8% for math and 50.6% for reading.

The next goal was to have all Kingsland students enrolled by October 1 have a graduation rate of 100%. The graduation rate for last year was 97%.

Next, the goal was to develop and adopt a district Redefining Ready scorecard to be implemented for all students in grades 9-12 by June 30, 2028. To date, this goal is on track to be met.

• The Minnesota Department of Education Compulsory Attendance Report for 2026-2027 showed 55 homeschool students in the Kingsland School District and 28 non-public students. The report was approved.

• The board reviewed the district’s enrollment, which is currently 473 students. Nineteen students have transferred to online schools and 138 students open enroll to other school districts. Discussion centered on potentially reaching out to the families who open enroll their children to understand why they made that choice and decide if there are changes that can be made.

• The Minnesota State High School League Foundation (MSHSL) Forms A and B were reviewed and approved. Form A allows the district to accept grants and funding to assist the school in recognizing, promoting and funding extracurricular participation by high school students in athletic and fine arts programs. Form B allows the district to accept grants and funding for health and wellness focused areas.

• Klavetter thanked the Kingsland Athletic Booster Club for their annual donation to the district to cover the cost of participation for any students that qualify for educational benefits.
