To the Editor,
Dear Candidates…Thanks and Good Luck!
Local candidates are putting themselves out there to be considered for election on November 3rd. Thank you! You’re committing yourself to spend hours (out of no doubt busy lives) to serve our communities. It ‘s not easy work. You’re to be commended. That needs to be said.
But let’s underline something Mary Bell said in her Fillmore Count Journal commentary of October 12th: what you’re agreeing to is a job interview, not a popularity contest. To do your “job” well means you’re agreeing to full engagement, doing research on complex issues, being open to listening to others, and the skills needed to work together (even with people with whom you may not always agree). That’s what you’re signing up for. That’s the “hiring decision” (“can this person do this job?”) that voters need to make.
Important stuff, in challenging times. Thanks again for your willingness to be considered.
