At the September 15 meeting of the Chatfield City Council, Fred Suhler, Jr. was honored for his long service to Chatfield as city attorney. Councilors Mike Urban and Dave Frank were absent.
Mayor John McBroom presented Suhler with a certificate of appreciation recognizing him for 27 years of service to the city and its residents. He was congratulated on his retirement and thanked sincerely for his years of service. A resolution was unanimously adopted recognizing and honoring Attorney Fred Suhler, Jr.
Suhler recalled that he had started many years ago with the city when Joel Young was city clerk at the time. He praised Chatfield and its government. “It has been a pleasure; the people of Chatfield should be advised that this government functions very well.”
A little background on Suhler’s long storied career. He phased his retirement over many years. Suhler graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1969. He worked in the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office for 11 years. He then moved to Rochester and served as Rochester’s city attorney for 10 years, starting in 1980. After 21 years on the prosecution side of the courtroom, he moved to the other side in 1991, serving as a public defender. He retired from that position in early 2015. During some of this period and up to his current retirement he served as city attorney for a few smaller communities, including Chatfield.
Other Business in Brief
•A public hearing was held on delinquent utility accounts. There was no public comment. A resolution was adopted, authorizing the collection of delinquent utility accounts with property taxes payable in one annual installment.
•A purchase offer from Anthony and Kelly Horsman in the amount of $42,000 for 1534 Enterprise Dr. SE was accepted.
•After a closed portion of the meeting, a motion was made and approved authorizing City Administrator Michele Peterson to negotiate a purchase agreement for the purchase of three parcels.
•Peterson reported that the carpets are to be cleaned in the office on September 30. The office will be closed to the public at 3:30 p.m. on that day.
•A $50 donation to the Fire Department was accepted.
•Library donations totaling $156 were accepted to be used for purchases for the Chatfield Public Library.
•Ambulance donations in the amount of $805 were accepted to be used to establish or operate services.
•A request from Chatfield Alliance/Choose Chatfield along with Chatfield FFA to use 4th St., City Park and Twiford St. on Saturday, October 3 for Fall-Apalooza and Family Fun Ag Day was approved.
•Mayor McBroom reported that he was pleased that kids are starting to wear their helmets while on their scooters.
