Chatfield Accepts Proposal for Civil Legal Services

Two proposals for city attorney were considered at the August 10 meeting of the Chatfield City Council. Councilor Pam Bluhm was absent.

The proposals for civil legal services had been submitted by Flaherty & Hood, P.A. and GDO Law. City Administrator Michele Peterson recommended Flaherty & Hood after a review of both firms. Flaherty & Hood is a larger firm but has demonstrated  municipal specialization, resources, charter city experience, a presence in southeast Minnesota, and competitive pricing. The proposal from Flaherty & Hood was accepted as recommended.

Other Business in Brief

• The splitting of a parcel near Margaret St. was approved as recommended by the Planning & Zoning Commission. A portion of the split parcel will be included in the parcel next to it.

• The resignation of Officer Kevin Landorf was accepted, effective August 6.

• Approval was granted for Ryan Gilbertson to be moved from a part-time officer to a full-time officer.

• Five library donations were accepted totaling $328. Some is to be used for capital purchases ($145) for the Chatfield Public Library and the rest ($183) is to be used for purchases for the library.

• Mayor John McBroom thanked Brian Burkholder and his staff for the prompt clean-up after Western Days.

• McBroom made it clear that there is new law that requires kids on scooters to wear a helmet.

• Councilor Mike Urban also thanked Burkholder and staff for a wonderful job during Western Days. Urban had added a discussion item to the agenda. He said there had been some communication issues related to Western Days and McBroom agreed there were some hard feelings. Urban asked for a special meeting of the Committee of the Whole to see what worked well and what needs fixing while issues related to Western Days are still fresh. Approval was granted to set up a special Committee of the Whole meeting to discuss issues related to Western Days.
