Cannabis Business Ordinance Public Hearing Set

June 9, 2026 by Karen Reisner Leave a Comment

At the June 2 meeting of the Fillmore County Board, approval was given to hold a public hearing on June 23 at 10 a.m. regarding proposed amendments to the Cannabis Business Ordinance. Commissioner Larry Hindt was absent.

Proposed amendments to the ordinance were reviewed; they include a simplified name of the ordinance and a change in the proximity to other facilities including religious establishments. The proposal is to reduce the setback to a religious establishment from 1,000 feet to 500 feet.

A public hearing is required to amend the ordinance.

At the last county board meeting 5th Sun Gardens LLC was denied the Microbusiness-retail endorsement due to a restriction in the county’s ordinance requiring a 1,000-foot setback from a religious establishment. The owner was given notice of his right to appeal.

Other Business in Brief

•An intern agreement between Aalyiah Root and the attorney’s office was approved. Root is an undergrad student in Madison. She grew up in the area. This is an unpaid position.

•An intern agreement between Coy Pederson and the attorney’s office was approved. He is a second-year law student in Louisville, Ky. Pederson said he grew up in the Lanesboro area. He was a high school teacher before making the decision to go to law school. County Administrator Bobbie Hillery noted that even though this is an unpaid position it will be a huge item to include with one’s references.

•A resolution was adopted entering the county into an agreement with the Department of Natural Resources for financial and technical assistance for snowmobile trails (Bluff Country Riders, Mabel-Canton Trail Busters, Hiawatha I and II and Tri-County Trailblazers) for the 2026-2027 snowmobile season.

•Approval was granted for payment of Jail Project Paybook #39 in the total amount of $39,648. Hillery expects they will get the Jail Project closed out this summer.

•Retiring County Engineer Ron Gregg’s last day will be June 4. Addressing the board, he said he hoped he has left the county better than he found it. Board members assured him he has and thanked him for all he has done for the county.
