The Kingsland School Board met for their last meeting of the school year on Monday, May 18, 2026, with their focus on filling the board’s vacated seat.
Last month the board received Board Chair Kyle Rader’s resignation. Because there are more than 90 days left of Rader’s term, per statute, the board needed to appoint someone to take seat. At that time it was decided the board would solicit applications from members of the community.
Since then the board received one letter of interest from Ashley Fenton.
Following the statute, once appointed, Fenton would have to wait 30 days before officially joining the board meetings.
“Officially speaking that person could be sworn in anytime after June 18,” Superintendent Scott Klavetter explained. “Barring any unforeseen special sessions or anything like that it would probably be at the July 6, 2026 meeting.”
The board unanimously voted to appoint Fenton to the vacated seat.
Beginning in June, Cindy Seabright will take over as board chair, Brady Wolfgram will become vice chair and Ann Oeltjen will take over negotiations.
Facility Update
As the school year draws to an end, the Kingsland School District will be undergoing a facelift during the summer’s improvement project. This exterior work is phase two of the facility’s maintenance plan. Last summer extensive work was completed on the building’s roof.
“I’m told material will soon be onsite and we’ll start to see some action,” Klavetter shared. “The site foreman from ICS is planning to be here, as well, to oversee the delivery, walk the building and get his key for the summer.”
Other Business
The board thanked the Everett H. Hale Post #68 American Legion, which donated $1,000 to the Industrial Tech department in memory of Ray Lange, and Stephanie Derby and Scott Mulholland who donated $50 in memory of Doug Bergey. They also thanked The Kingsland School Parents (KSP) for purchasing books for all the elementary students.
The board will be completing anonymous self evaluation questionnaires to reflect on the collective of the board and how they work together. This is part of the strategic planning the district is currently working on with the help of staff, community members and students.
The board approved all 34 seniors for graduation.
Lori Weiss and Cierra Ulwelling were recommended and approved for teacher tenure.
The board, with Rader abstaining, approved Steve Bateson as the new Activities director and building substitute teacher.
The capital outlay of $254,150.84 was approved. This covers print materials, curriculums, uniforms, office equipment or supplies and up to $35,000 to purchase a motor for bus #3.
The board voted to continue to support the efforts for the creation of a Spring Valley welcome sign.
