It is their fourth title in as many years. It is their first perfect regular season in school history. Houston girls basketball easily defeated the final three squads on its schedule to stay unblemished. M-C fell on Wednesday, 61-31. Emma Geiwitz (21 pts, 9-18 FGs, 10 stls) had a point-steal double-double. Knights Girls Grab Second West Title
It is a little murky to discern when it occurred. Somewhere in the second to last week of the regular season, amidst COVID cancellations, Kingsland’s girls won their second straight SEC-West title. The final week saw team Double-K
win twice. Kingsland downed Lanesboro 49-27 on the back of a 12-0 run to start the second half (up 19-14 to up 31-14). The final was 49-27. Ellie Buchholtz scored nearly half of Kingsland’s points (23 pts, 3-10 threes, 5 rebs, 3 stls). Sam Wernimont (7 pts, 3 asts), Emily Miner (5 pts, 6 rebs), and Anika Reiland (5 pts, 6 rebs, 3 asts) helped. The Burros were led by Brielle Ruen (11 pts, 7 rebs) and Kaci Ruen (10 pts, 6 rebs). Lanesboro (9-7, 9-9) is 1A’s 10-seed, will play at 7-seed GM (9-7). Kingsland then shot a season-best 56% (28 of 50) in taking out SG 64-27. Buchholtz (16 pts, 7-13 FGs, 4 asts, 4 stls), Reiland (14 pts, 6-6 FGs, 4 asts, 7 stls), Wernimont (12 pts, 5-8 FGs), and Shelby Beck (9 pts, 3-6 FGs, 7 rebs) did work. Addyson McHugh (9 pts, 6 rebs) and Emerson Ingvalson (9 points) led the Lions. The Knights held their final four foes to 88 points combined. They’ve held 10 opponents under 40 points. Kingsland (12-1, 14-2) wins the West over GM (8-4, 9-7). Steve Hauser’s group is 1A’s 3-seed and will host 14-seed M-C (4-14). SG (3-11, 3-12) is 1A’s 15-seed, will play at BP (15-3).
Backer’s OT GW-Three Caps Gophers Regular Season
It has been a strong season for Chatfield’s boys basketball. Led by senior scorer Reid Johnson, Jeff DeBuhr’s Gophers have gone from a 9-17 squad, to 14-4. Chatfield ended the year with three wins including their most notable to date. They first easily handled 1A school Houston 92-48. Five Gophers made double figures, led by R-Johnson (27 pts, 11-14 FGs, 4-6 threes, 5 rebs). Cole Johnson (15 pts, 6-8 FGs, 10 asts, 5 stls), Eli Hopp (12 pts, 5-7 FGs), Ben Fretland (10 pts, 5-6 FGs, 4 rebs), and Austin Koenigs (10 pts, 5-6 FGs, 6 rebs) also did so. Chatfield shot 40 of 63 from the field (63.5%) and 7 of 15 from deep (46.7%), both season highs. Noah Kingsley had 21 points (4-10 threes) to lead Houston. Morgan Rohweder added 8. The Gophers then hosted TRC West champ PEM. Chatfield led 35-26 at the half, but the ‘Dogs pulled even at 42 in the second. Chatfield then led 48-42 only for PEM to pull even late (48-48). Tied at 50, each team had the ball in the final seconds but came up empty. The game went to OT. PEM out-scored Chatfield 24-15 in the second half. In the extra session, the Gophs trailed 55-50 (1:22) and 58-53 (0:37). But Chatfield hit three threes in the final 1:22. Drew Schinder’s made it 58-56. PEM then turned it over. Sam Backer hit a top of the key three at the buzzer for the 59-58 win and a euphoric pig-pile! It was the sophomore’s only three points. R-Johnson (20 pts, 4-5 FTs, 12 rebs) had a double-double. He hit the Gophers first OT three. C-Johnson (8 pts, 6 asts) and Schindler (8 pts, 4 asts) helped. David Castleberg and Fretland each had 7 points. Aeron Stevens (20 pts) and Blake Herber (13 pts, 5 rebs, 4 asts, 7 stls) led the Bulldogs. The Gophers finished off the year beating Z-M 56-45. Castleberg (11 pts, 5-7 FGs, 5 rebs), R-Johnson (10 pts, 6-6 FTs, 7 rebs, 5 stls), Schindler (10 pts, 5-7 FTs, 5 rebs), Backer (9 pts), and Henry Gathje (7 pts, 3-3 FGs) gave the Gophers balance again. C-Johnson and Fretland combined for 5 points, but 15 rebounds and 10 assists. Chatfield made a season high 16 of 21 free throws (76.2%). The Gophers (10-4, 14-4) finish second to PEM (13-2, 13-5) in the West. Winners of five straight, Chatfield is 1AA’s 7-seed, will host 10-seed Cannon Falls (8-10).
Trojans Boys Down Rival SG, Hammer LC/H
It was Rushford-Peterson boys basketball’s best week of the year. On Monday, it was the renewal of the R-P versus SG rivalry. The teams have penned many an important game over the years. The coaching staffs are still linked (Tom Vix helping Wade Grinde in SG). The Lions (11-2, 12-2) entered having clinched the SEC-East title. R-P (5-7, 9-6) sat above-500 playing the rigorous TRC schedule. The game was a key one for 1A seeding. Through 1½ halves of basketball, the score sat tied 30-30. The largest lead was five by each team (SG 5-0, R-P 30-25). Trojan Justin Ruberg proved the key shot-maker. The 6’3” junior forward hit a trio of second-half corner threes (a critical shot versus SG’s 1-3-1). His third make put R-P ahead 33-30. Luke O’Hare followed with a baseline jumper, and then Ruberg a put-back basket. The Trojans led 37-30 with five minutes to play. Back-to-back Ben Wieser baskets, after R-P broke SG’s late-game pressure, had the Trojans up 41-33 with 2:37 left. But SG then went on a 7-1 run, getting baskets from brothers Caden Grinde and Tysen Grinde, then a big three-point play from Carson Gerard. R-P led 42-40 with under a minute left. Their next two possession were turnovers, but SG missed its last three shots, including a game-tying two, and a go-head three. With 0:05.4 on the clock, Trojan junior guard Malachi Bunke iced it with two (1-and-1 bonus) free throws (44-40). The Trojans posted their best win of the year, 46-40. Ruberg (19 pts, 8-12 FGs, 3-6 threes, 9 rebs) led all scorers. Wieser added 9 points (4-5 FGs). O’Hare finished with 6 (pts), 5 (rebs), and 7 (asts). He had 6 (pts), 4 (rebs), and 5 (asts) in the second half. Gerard (14 pts, 6-11 FGs, 9 rebs, 3 stls) neared a double-double to lead the Lions. Elijah Solum added 10 points. Lion leading scorer Caden Grinde was held to a season-low 8 points (3-15 FGs). His previous low was 15. R-P had multiple players defend the 1,000-point scorer including the 6’2” O’Hare and quicker 5’8” guard Grady Hengel. R-P shot 18 of 35 (51.4%) from the field, SG 15 of 43 (34.9%). R-P was 5 of 14 from distance (35.7%), SG 3 of 14 (21.4%). SG won the turnover-battle 11 to 15. R-P had 10 second-half miscues (four in the
final 2:54). It was the Trojans sixth straight win a series they lead 46-10. On Friday, R-P hosted La Crescent, posting a 65-37 win. Ruberg (17 pts, 8-11 FGs, 7 rebs) and Bunke (14 pts, 4-4 threes) hit double figures. Hengel (9 pts, 3-4 threes, 4 rebs) and O’Hare (8 pts, 8 rebs) helped. R-P hit 10 of 20 threes (50%) and 24 of 44 field goals (54.5%). It was their sixth game in their last seven where they shot over 50%. It was their fifth straight win. R-P (6-6, 11-6) ended a 7-game series losing streak to the Lancers. Chris Drinkall’s bunch are 1A’s 4-seed, will host 13-seed Faribault-B.A. (5-11).
Wrestling Quickly Goes From Section to State
It was a week of team section wrestling. Per COVID, the grappling post-season changed. Rather than wrestle-in and quarterfinals one day, then section semifinals and finals on Saturday (followed by state a week later), section quarters and semis took place on Wednesday, with the section final and state quarterfinals occurring (at the same site) on Saturday. Teams could go from the start of the section playoffs to wrestling “state” level duals in a matter of days. Two “Journal 10’” wrestling programs had big hopes.
Gophers Upset by Z-M in Semis
Top-seeded and #9 in Class A Chatfield (22-1) was one favorite in the section. Matt Mauseth’s group beat St. Charles (8-seed, 9-12) in the quarters on the back of five forfeits, 113 (Ben Carrier), 145 (Lukas Carrier), 182 (Grady Schott), 195 (Campbell Berge), 220 (A.J. Karver), and five pins, 106 (Gage Bartels), 120 (Carson Rowland), 138 (Kail Schott), 160 (Tate Karver), and 170 (Seth Goetzinger). Cody Guenther (132 > 12-4 major decision) and Jack Dornack (126 > 9-2 decision) also won. But in the semis versus Zumbrota-Mazeppa (4-seed, 14-8), Chatfield held just one lead, 4-3 after Ben Carrier’s 22-8 major at 113. The Cougars then took 120 (pin with 0:15 left in the third), 126 (19-11 major), and 132 (pin) to lead 19-4. Z-M frosh Ben Murray’s win/pin over Gopher senior Cody Guenther at 132 was a big one. Things had fallen identically to the team’s first meeting. The teams exchanged wins from 138 through 160, though the lead still stayed 15 (28-13). K-Schott (#10 at 138, pin) and T-Karver (#4 at 160, wrestled 152 > 5-3 decision) had the Gopher “Ws.” Goetzinger (#4 at 170) and G-Schott (#4 at 182) got Chatfield back in it with back-to-back pins (down 28-25). They were within three at the same spot in the regular season match and won two of the final three (both by forfeit) for a 34-31 win. But Z-M wouldn’t forfeit any in the playoffs. Gabe Tupper (#3 at 182) returned after not wrestling the first time and got a 9-3 decision at 195, making it 31-25 Cougars. Ethan Kovars (#5 at 195) went up a weight (220) and pinned A.J. Karver (#4 at 220). Z-M had an insurmountable 37-25 lead. Gopher Caden Nolte got a pin at 285. Chatfield was subtracted a point for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Cougars pulled the upset, 37-30. Chatfield’s excellent season ends at 23-2.
GMLOS Beats D-E Falls Short-Handed in Section Title Match
Meanwhile, a second ‘Journal 10’ team, also a section contender, fought for glory. GMLOS (3-seed, 28-4), the defending 1A champs first took out Caledonia/Houston (6-seed, 9-17). After the Bulldogs took 106 (Anthony Romero) and 113 (Aiden Quintana) by pin, Cal/Hou ran off four straight wins to lead 19-12. But the Warriors won just one more match. GM took 145 (Donavon Felten) by 12-2 major decision. Rece Voigt (152), Daniel Smith (160), Christian Jacobsen (170), and Noah Sayles (182) then ran off four straight pins. Cameron Sneed (195) followed with a 5-3 decision. Christian Luthe (285) added an 8-1 decision, as GMLOS prevailed 46-22. They moved on to face Dover-Eyota (2-seed, 21-4), which beat FCLMC (7-seed, 8-15) in the quarters (See ‘Wrestling’ for more). Bulldogs/Eagles was a re-match of a dual just days prior, won by D-E 39-28. GMLOS switched things up. Only four Bulldogs wrestled at the same weight as the first match-up. The teams each had a pair of pins over the first four weights for a 12-12 score. Romero (106) and Cohen Wiste (126) had falls for GM. The teams then alternated wins from 132 through 152. GMLOS’ victories were by fall; Lucas Winfield (138) and Voigt (152). The Eagles got a tech fall (132) and a Gavin Gust 3-1 decision over Felten in sudden death OT (145). The Bulldogs led 24-20 after 152. D-E then took the next two, including Tyler Shea beating Corbin Ludemann (170) by 11-6 decision. The Eagles went ahead 26-24. Shea beat C-Jacobsen 4-2 in the teams’ first meeting (putting D-E up 27-18). But Ludemann’s stepping in allowed GM to bump studs C-Jacobsen (182), Sayles (195), and Sneed (220) up a weight. All three registered pins. Sneed’s clinched things. GMLOS got the revenge win 42-32. The ‘Dogs (3-seed, 30-4) moved on to its second straight section final, opponent Z-M (4-seed, 15-8). Bulldog state-ranked guys Romero, Felten, and Sayles didn’t wrestle (contact tracing). Z-M took six of the first seven for a 29-3 lead and didn’t look back. GMLOS won just four matches; C-Wiste (126 > 7-1 decision), Voigt (152 > 7-1 decision), Smith (160 > 5-2 decision), and C-Jacobsen (182 > pin). The Cougars took three by forfeit (113, 220, 285), three by fall (120, 145, 195), one by tech fall (106), and three by decision (132, 138, 170) for a 50-15 win. The Bulldogs excellent season ends at 30-5. Z-M resultantly fell to Kimball Area 35-23 in the state quarters.
