Spring Grove scoreless as season ends in section opener

June 6, 2022 by Lee Epps Leave a Comment

The Section 1A baseball opener was a pitchers’ duel; Spring Grove junior Caleb Griffin and Wabasha-Kellogg freshman Cole Scheel each struck out 10 batters and walked only three. A Jaxon Strinmoen infield single was the lone base hit for No. 7 seed Spring Grove. The No. 10 seeded Falcons managed five hits in their 2-0 road win on May 26.

Jaxon Strinmoen slides into third base as Wabasha-Kellogg’s Ryan Hartert awaits the throw from home plate following a passed ball. The Spring Grove sophomore had the only base hit in the Lions’ 2-0 elimination loss in the section opener.

There were no earned runs. Griffin scattered the five Falcon hits into five different innings, but both W-K runs were scored on plays involving a Lion error. An errant pick-off throw allowed Parker Springer to score from third base with two outs in the top of the first inning. Blake Passe was hit by a pitch to open the Falcon sixth and eventually scored on an outfield bobble.

Back-to-back fly-ball outs in the fifth inning were the only two baseballs to leave the infield off a Lion bat. The lone hit by Strinmoen came in the fourth inning. Strinmoen, after a walk and a passed ball, reached third base with only one out. But a strikeout and a ground ball to the second baseman stranded the potential tying run.

Two innings later, Elijah Solum walked, stole second base and took advantage of the only Falcon error to reach third base – again with only one out.  But again, Scheel escaped with a strikeout and a ground ball to the second baseman.

The Spring Grove season ended with an 11-8 record while W-K improved to 7-13. Eleven of the Falcons losses had come against larger-school, Class AA competition. Wabasha-Kellogg would then be eliminated from postseason play, dropping its next two games against the No. 2 and 3 seeds (Lyle/Pacelli and Southland).

The Falcons had also defeated the Lions, 2-0, the last time they met in the playoffs in 2018 – also at Blayne Onsgard Memorial Field, also with Spring Grove having the higher seed. All-time, Wabasha-Kellogg has won four of the five games versus Spring Grove, including all three playoff games. The 2022 regular season Lions versus Falcons game was not played due to weather.
