The Spring Grove volleyball girls swept three conference matches in three straight nights, all by 3-0 scores – on the road at Lanesboro on Oct. 5 and the next night at Houston before hosting Kingsland. The showdown with the Burros decided which of the two would stay closest on the heels of league-leading and state-ranked Mabel-Canton. Spring Grove freshman Kendal Van Minsel stepped in and stepped up in the illness absence of senior setter Rachel Normann. The Lions ended the week at 13-6 (9-1 SEC), Lanesboro at 15-8 (7-3 SEC). The two contenders have a quick rematch at Spring Grove on Oct. 11.
Spring Grove 3, at Lanesboro 0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-16)
Digging was impressive while hitters may have felt the pressure with more-than-desired attacking errors. Spring Grove had the best hitting efficiency, but only a weak 6%. Lanesboro did have one more kill (28 to 27), but the Lions had a 10-to-6 blocking margin. Serve receivers outperformed servers, who lost more points with errant serves than with aces. With 13 fewer total scoring errors, Spring Grove outscored the home team by 14 points overall.
It began with an exciting extra-points first set, won by the Lions, 26-24. Grove, with an early 7-to-2 run, took and kept the lead until Lanesboro finally caught up at 24-24. The second set was tied six times, finally at 18-18 before the Lions pulled away (25-22). After two competitive sets, the Grove girls bolted out to a surprising 9-1 lead in the final set. That early eruption would lead to a nine-point margin, 25-16.
Lion left-side hitter Kenadee Gerard was the KFIL-Radio Lion Player of the Match with 15 kills and 3 blocks at the net plus 6 digs. Van Minsel supplied 24 assists while exceptional libero/passer Maggie Lile led diggers with 17. Addyson McHugh had 13 digs and Julia Halverson 12. Halverson served 13 for 13 with 2 aces.
Kaci Ruen was the radio honoree for Lanesboro with 14 kills, 2 blocks, 13 digs and 3 ace serves. Ella Cambern directed the attack with 24 assists along with 19 digs. Malia Tessum dug 24 times.
It was 85th volleyball meeting between the two programs; Spring Grove has won 54, Lanesboro 29 with 2 ties.
The Lion B-team won 2-0 (25-22, 25-14), and the C-team won 2-0 (25-9, 25-11))
Spring Grove 3, at Houston 0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-19)
With an extremely strong 47% efficiency, Gerard put away 19 kills while McHugh (great 37% efficiency) scored with 14 kills, an ace block and 5 ace serves while serving 21 for 21. Van Minsel aired up 32 assists. Lile had 14 digs while adding 2 kills from the back row, assisting on 3 other kills and serving 6 for 6 with an ace. Danika Holty served 10 for 10 with 3 aces. Halverson dug 11 times.
For Houston Sydney Torgerson had 8 kills and 5 blocks at the net along with 5 digs. Jaden Woodard added 6 kills, and Emily Botcher dug 15 times.
The Lions scored the first five points of the match and the first seven points of the second set. However, the Hurricanes tallied the first four points of the finale. But Spring Grove replied by taking 10 of the next 11 points and was never caught. The Lions led by six at 14-8 and would go on to win by the same margin (25-19).
Error totals were similar, but Spring Grove attacked with 22% efficiency (Houston 8%) with 44 kills to the Hurricanes’ 20. Houston served well at 93%, but the Lions (92%) scored with 11 aces to the ‘Canes’ 4.
After winning their first three matches, the ‘Canes (4-12, 4-7 SEC), fell for the 12th time in the last 13 contests. It was the Lions’ 16th straight win in a series they now lead 93 wins to 16.
at Spring Grove 3, Kingsland 0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-21)
The Lions came from behind with amazing scoring streaks in both of the first two sets. The Knights (6-10, 3-7 SEC) led set one, 14-12, before Spring Grove scored the final 13 points. Kingsland led set two, 14-12, before the Lions took 13 of the last 16 points. Set three was a battle until late – tied 11 times, finally at 20-20 before Grove closed with a 5-to-1 run.
Gerard led scoring with 15 kills (good 21% efficiency) while McHugh added 10 kills and 3 ace serves while serving 14 for 14. Holty served 9 for 9 with 2 aces; Halverson served 20 for 21 with an ace. Lile served 13 for 14 with an ace while from the back row, contributing 2 kills and assist in addition to 25 digs. Van Minsel had 34 of the team’s 37 assists. With a strong 33% hitting efficiency, Lydia Solum scored with 8 kills, a block and an ace serve.
For the Knights, Shelby Beck had 5 kills and an ace serve while Anika Reiland had 13 digs and Audrey Webster 11.
Again, team total errors were evenly split, but the Lions scored twice as many points on their own merit (39 kills+1 block+8 aces = 48) than did the Knights (19 kills+2 blocks+3 aces = 24). Spring Grove served 95% to the visitors’ 85%. The Lions attacked with 14% efficiency to the Knights’ 3%.
The volleyball programs have met only nine times with the Lions winning six.
The Lion B-team improved to 11-2 with a 2-0 win over Kingsland (25-15, 25-13). The C-team went to 7-1 with a 2-0 win (25-13, 25-17).
