The Spring Grove girls (6-4, 6-4 SEC) remained close only in the third and final set during the conference volleyball rematch at Mabel-Canton. The Cougars (11-0, 11-0 SEC) appeared deserving of their No. 4 state Class A ranking while taking all three sets – 25-15, 25-15, 25-20. The Lions had more earned points (kills, blocks, aces) than errors in each set, but they could not keep up with the more explosive and more consistent Cougars.
In set three, the Lions rallied from a six-point deficit to pull even at 17 and then again at 18 before a pair of Spring Grove errors and a Cougar block put Mabel-Canton ahead for good.
Both teams served five more aces than errors, but the Cougars held a huge 43-to-23 scoring margin at the net (kill and blocks). Superior passing helped Mabel-Canton attack 96 times to only 72 hitting opportunities for Spring Grove. The Cougars not only attacked more often but also with greater authority, hitting with 33% efficiency to the Lions’ 8%.
Reigning Conference Player of the Year Kenidi McCabe had a triple double for the Cougars with 14 kills, 18 assists and 10 digs. Grove’s returning All-SEC Addyson McHugh also hit with a strong 33% efficiency to lead Lion scoring with 11 kills and 3 blocks. Julia Halverson served 100% (14 for 14) with a team-high 5 aces. Maggie Lile led the defense with 14 digs.
It was the eighth straight win for M-C in the series, including an earlier 3-0 victory this season at Spring Grove. The Cougars won the B-team match, 2-1, and the freshman contest , 2-0.
