Zoning commission okays Amish cemetery

PRESTON - At their August monthly meeting on Thursday, the Fillmore County Planning & Zoning Commission heard proposals for two conditional land use permits (CUPs).
Amish Cemetery
Daniel and Verna Detweiler petitioned for a CUP to place a cemetery on their land located in Bristol Township. The land is located in an agricultural district and is approximately 8 miles southwest of Harmony. Daniel Detweiler was present to explain the CUP petition.
Mr. Detweiler said the main purpose of their application was to re-locate the existing cemetery, which is in an area that has poor drainage, to a new site.
Chairman Mike Touhy stated that he had visited the existing cemetery and the area they would like to relocate to. He saw how the existing cemetery is in a low area and gets pockets of water. The existing site was planned quickly due to a death in the family and it was originally thought the area had sandy soil. Afterwards it was realized that this wasn't the case. He's also been to the new area and feels it is above water levels and looks very nice.
The public presented no questions regarding the CUP. After brief questions concerning the cemetery's plot layout the commission approved the CUP.
Silver Mound Farms
Terrance Pfaff of Silver Mound Dairy petitioned to transfer ownership of his feedlot, under the existing CUP on his farm in Bristol Township. The feedlot is located in an agricultural district, approximately 8 miles west of Harmony. Mr. Pfaff is the owner of the former Tammel-Barnes Farms Feedlot.
There were no public questions concerning the CUP. Commission member discussion concentrated on the former conditions listed within the old CUP, specifically if they were needed due to new ordinances that were not in place at the time the original permit was granted. Mike Frauenkron, Assistant Zoning Administrator, reported that most of the conditions could be removed and were already mandated under the county's manure management plan.
County Commissioner Duane Bakke suggested that a condition in the CUP that the Silver Mound Farms must follow the manure management plan. The commission included this condition in the CUP and afterwards approved the petition.
Both applications will be forwarded to the Fillmore County Board for final approval.
