Campaign finance complaint against Davids dismissed

The Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board have dismissed a complaint against the People for Davids Committee which was brought by Frank Wright, Peggy Hanson and Harlan Taylor, all of Lanesboro. The ruling was issued on August 15.
In the complaint, the three questioned whether $3,180 in mileage reimbursement and $3,704 claimed for postage by the Davids' committee as a non-campaign expense should be disallowed because the committee failed to provide sufficient information to justify the classification. The complaint also asked the board to investigate whether Davids benefited personally from receiving any improper reimbursement for expenses and whether there was any pattern of abuse in using non-campaign funds.
While the Board did find that the "complainant's allegation that insufficient information is included in the Committee's Report [Davids] to support the constituent services non-campaign disbursement classification has merit," they found no basis for any intentional wrongdoing on the part of the Davids Committee.
The People for Davids Committee submitted additional records to the Board which further clarified non-campaign expenditures, resulting in all charges being dismissed or considered resolved.
The Board did rule that Davids exceeded his 2005 spending limit by $107.26. Davids must also amend his 2005 report to reclassify the cost of $615.10 in pens used in his campaign.
Davids called the complaint frivolous, an election campaign ploy and a waste of taxpayer dollars.
"I hope we can start to talk about the real issues - roads and bridges, health care, and education - and stop the campaign of personal attacks," Davids said.

In other action on August 15, the Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board fined House Minority Leader Matt Entenza $28,105, the amount Entenza received above the special source limits for contributions in 2005. Entenza has 30 days to pay the penalty.
