Regime change begins at home, I say. That's why I am not voting for Gil Gutknecht or Mark Kennedy in November. I'll vote for Donald Duck, the town drunk, my dead uncle, or T.C. the Twins mascot before I will vote for either of these incumbents. I might even leave those ballot items blank.
This isn't an endorsement for any candidate or one party, just a rejection of this administration's domestic and foreign policies, and those who have supported them. From our energy policies, to the federal deficit, from the War on Terror to Hurricane Katrina, this administration has shown an incompetence unequalled in recent memory. Our collective outrage over how Bush, Chenny and Rumsfeld have been running this country far outweighs anything positive Messrs. Gutknecht and Kennedy may have done to deserve our support, which is little. I don't care what their position on farm policy or energy is; I don't care where they stand on gay marriage or abortion; I don't care where they stand on immigration reform.
For the past six years, these two have sat complicity idle while the Bush regime has hammered away at our constitution (as in wiretapping, Guantanamo), lied about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and started a pre-emptive war that has claimed over 3,000 American lives and killed tens of thousands of Iraqis, while creating the largest deficit in the history of the United States.
Gutknecht and Kennedy do not deserve my vote, and will not get it. And I hope they don't get your's either.
There is no other national need at this time other than creating an opposition force to the Bush Administration. One that controls the pocket book and is willing to use the powers of Congress to block the excesses of the Executive branch.
When Gutknecht was first elected to Congress twelve years ago, he claimed to be a Beltway fixer along with his Contract With America pals.
The contract begins: "As Republican members of the House of Representatives and as citizens to join the body we propose not just to change its policies, but even more important, to restore the bonds of trust between the people and their elected representatives."
That trust has been violated; the contract is up.
Gutknecht and Kennedy have voted more than 90 percent of the time to support Bush's policies. And it's time to clean house.
