When I decided to take on the Highland Store as my next Real Bites column, there was one problem I discovered. Where in bluff's country is it? Having not acquainted myself very well yet with the curving, nestled in small towns of the area I had no idea where I was headed. Luckily, I was talking with my Grandma and mom about it and decided it was just best to bring them along as a navigational tool since I was assuming my GPS wasn't going to lead me quite where I needed to go. It would be a fun, girls lunch out on a nice Sunday afternoon, anyway.
Apparently we weren't the only ones with the same idea to stop for a bite on a Sunday as the place was packed! As we waited for a table to open, we strolled around the unique gift shop area intertwined with an assortment of health supplements and organic foods. The atmosphere of the cozy store was nice as the usuals mingled with first-timers all saying how delicious their meals had been. Eventually we took a seat and debated over our choices for our meal. There was the option of having breakfast, available all day, with a variety of omelets, whole-wheat pancakes, waffles and vegetarian selections or a soup and sandwich combo or the always good choice, the special of the day. While everything sounded tasty, one of the specials, swiss steak, caught my attention right away. The day before eating at the Highland Store had been a busy one for me and my family, as we had spent twelve hours walking for Relay For Life to help raise money for the American Cancer Society. Let's just say, I had worked up quite an appetite from Relay and a hearty meal of swiss steak with green peppers, corn, real mashed potatoes and gravy and a bun sounded like just the thing to refuel. Now, when I say real mashed potatoes, I mean REAL. The kind where there's still chunks and potato skins in the mix. There's only one word to describe these: yum.
Everything was absolutely delicious and hit just the spot. The fresh organic salad of mixed greens, cucumbers and carrots was a refreshing start to the meal and the desserts I kept seeing come out sure looked like the perfect way to end a meal if I had any room left! Sometimes, I think I should start with dessert since I never seem to make it that far into the meal! I could just see my grandma scolding me for not eating my veggies first, but I have a feeling after seeing the selection at the Highland Store, she would have let it go just this one time.
My mom is lactose-intolerant and saw a smoothie on the menu that was made with no dairy. Once she tried it she had to ask just to make sure there wasn't dairy in it because it tasted like the smoothie was made with ice cream! It was a flavorful mix of tropical fruit, soy milk and ground flaxseed that was perfect for a healthy way to give in to a sugar fueled craving. The staff was very helpful in giving tips on how to make our own smoothies at home, and the best way to use flaxseed to get the most benefit from it.
The Highland Store is a great choice for breakfast or lunch set in a cozy cafe. The menu is full of healthy yet filling options to fit any taste palate and the staff is superb and knowledgeable about the benefits in the foods they provide.
