Lanesboro School Board Report: Insurance refund to be used for Flex and HRA fees

LANESBORO - What to do with excess money? Now that's a problem seldom faced by a school board! The Lanesboro School Board needed to decide what to do with a refund from Blue Cross/Blue Shield insurance at their regular meeting Thursday, September 21st. The $5,000 to $6,000 refund technically belonged to past employees of the school. The actual employees no longer work for the school and there are no records for percentages or amounts overpaid from long ago.
While staff and administration considered the possibility of creating scholarships with the money as they deliberated on the best use of the money, in the end they suggested using the money to offset employee fees for Flex and HRA. Between $800 and $900 will be used this year; the remainder of the refund will be kept in the general account and used in future years for the same purpose until it is depleted.
Levy Certification
Superintendent Jeff Boggs asked the board to certify a $505,000 maximum levy for the year 2007-up from last year's $449,000. Boggs reminded the board the budget would be fine tuned between now and the beginning of December, at which time a firm budget would be set. The board complied, certifying the $505,000 levy; the levy may go down, but cannot be raised any higher.

Curriculum and Instruction
Referring to the document as a "philosophical idea of our approach to curriculum," Boggs presented High School Principal Brett Clarke's annual report on curriculum and instruction to the board. Boggs told the board the document was the "cornerstone of what we do here." Standard tests are used to identify necessary changes in curriculum.
This year the document was not complete. Usually, test results are included in the report. Results of last year's MCA's were scored incorrectly at the state; correct results will be sent by the state to the school in November.
Boggs informed the board the MCA's give the school a better benchmark than previous standardized tests. Students take the MCA's every year from grade three to eight; this yearly testing will provide better information for comparisons. Elementary students will no longer be required to take the Iowa Basic tests. Tests in science and social studies will probably be included in MCA's in the near future.
In 2007, freshmen will take a writing assessment, sophomores a reading test, and juniors a math test-all part of the MCA-II/GRAD requiring a satisfactory score for the students to be able to graduate from high school.

At the end of the meeting, a personnel issue necessitated closing the meeting to the public.
