Preston City Council Report: Council raises salaries for ambulance crew officers

Preston - On October 16, the Preston City Council heard from a representative of the ambulance crew regarding increasing the volunteer ambulance officer salaries. During a previous volunteer ambulance meeting, members stated that the last salary raise took place in 1997 and that it is time to evaluate salary increases. Besides making the salaries more equitable the ambulance crew hopes this raise will help them recruit new members and increase the retention rate of existing members. Six positions would receive this increase: the director, trainer, maintenance, two schedulers and service.
The ambulance crew also requested increases in the training reimbursements given to participants who show up for training meetings. Currently training reimbursement is $5.15 per hour; the ambulance crew would like to raise the reimbursement to $16 per hour. The reason for this rate hike is again to encourage more people to participate in the training and to keep the current members that are already participating.
Council members agreed with the rate increases for the six ambulance positions but were hesitant about raising the training rate. Kurt Reicks stated that it was hard to grasp an over 100% increase for training dollars, especially when it is not included in the budget. Other council members agreed; they approved the rate increases but tabled the training increases for discussion at future meetings.
Intra-County Emergency
Management Agreement
Joe Hoffman, Administrator, presented to the council an Intra-County Emergency Management Agreement that would take place with the county. With this agreement the county would take the lead for emergency preparedness and pull the city into their activities. If at any time the council feels this agreement does not meet the needs of the city the agreement can be terminated with 90 days notice. Hoffman recommended the city approve this agreement because the county has already started emergency preparedness procedures and is working with FEMA. The council approved this recommendation.
B&B Bowl
The council approved a $10,000 loan for the B&B Bowl in Preston. The loan will be used to pay a portion of the costs needed to replace their building's roof - an improvement that is badly needed. The terms include 3% interest payable monthly with the principal amortized over five years, payable monthly. If B&B Bowl should cease to operate their business within Fillmore County at any time during the term of the note, the entire remaining principal and interest could become immediately due and payable.
