Chatfield School Board members and school administrators met for the June 2011 meeting and discussed many items on the agenda. All board members except for Greg LaPlante were in attendance.

Discussion got underway during district patron time when Craig Manahan announced that action for building a new press box at the football needed immediate attention in order to have the press box operable by the start of the next football season. Construction would need to be started by early July. A preliminary plan was passed out to each of the board members. An estimate cost of around $25,000.00 was the amount that would be required for the project. The original thought on the budget for the project was roughly $18,000.00. Board clerk Matt McMahon requested to see a professional estimate and would like a professional contractor involved because of liability issues. Kathy Schellhammer, board director, stated she was also concerned for safety. Manahan requested the school put down $10,000.00 for the project as CCTV would also put down $10,000.00. The board declined to fully committing to the project, but told Manahan to progress with the plans for the next meeting. A special meeting could be called to further discuss construction plans.

Superintendent Ed Harris gave an update on summer maintenance at both the elementary school and high school. He also announced the June 2011 enrollment numbers were up 20 from June of last year. Craig Ihrke presented all of the elementary news of the month. First, he began by saying that MCA scores were improving slightly and scores were even higher than the growth factor for Kindergarten through sixth grade. He anticipates that the school will follow the same trend next year. A brief summary was given on the two summer school sessions that take place during the summer months. One is currently underway in June and the second will begin in August.

Later in the high school report, Principal Randy Paulson commended the junior class for having higher math scores on the state standardized tests. Paulson also stated that since the dismissal of school, he has been busy interviewing candidates for the vacant staff positions for the 2011-2012 school year. Some employees have been hired. Angie Grant is the new danceline advisor. Jeff Debuhr, a former teacher and coach from Lanesboro High School, was hired as a math instructor. Lindsey Wojtkiewicz is now in the guidance counselor position at Chatfield High School. Wojtkiewicz worked in guidance admissions at the University of Minnesota. Finally, David Hinck will be the long-term social studies substitute and will also take the role as the Community Service Club advisor.

Throughout the meeting board members recognized accounting clerk Marcia Groth for her 26 years of service as she retires from that position. Before adjourning, the board passed a motion to move the July meeting from July 18th to July 19th because many members reported they would be absent.
