Doug Everett Hill, 37, of Austin, was charged in Fillmore County District Court on Tuesday, January 2, 2007, with check forgery, as well as receiving stolen property and possession of stolen checks.
According to the criminal complaint, it is alleged that Hill and two women forged and cashed 10 checks belonging to an Eyota man totalling $950 on or around August 5, 2006. In addition, personal items were stolen from the man's residence that were later pawned at an Austin business. A bench warrant has been issued for the arrest of Tamara Austin and Brittany Ross, who are wanted in relation to this case.
Judge Robert Benson released Hill on his own recognizance pending his next court appearance on January 8.
Susan Hershberger, 20, of Mabel, was charged in District Court on December 21, 2006, with eight felony counts, including theft and check forgery.
According to court documents, it is alleged that Hershberger, who was hired to take care of an elderly Mabel man, forged checks belonging to the man totalling $4000. The defendant, who is represented by Fred Suhler, Jr., claims that the checks were for back wages as well as a loan.
Judge Robert Benson released Hershberger on her own recognizance. Her next scheduled court appearance is set for April 2, 2007.
