Strosahl hired to lead Kingsland

SPRING VALLEY - After several months and meetings, Kingsland has a new Superintendent.
Kingsland High School Principal Darrin Strosahl will be the new Superintendent of the School District. He was hired during the board meeting on Wednesday, February 21. Strosahl was selected from a field of six finalists that were interviewed by a committee that was involved in the search process. All of the interviews were public meetings and attended by school board members. Strosahl came to the district in 2001 as a Principal and replaces Greg Ehresmann who has retired. His hire will result in a vacancy in his position as High School Principal.
School Board Recognition Week
Next week will be School Board Recognition Week and Superintendent Strosahl said this past year the board has been burdened with the bond issue duties, along with a building project and now the hiring of a new Superintendent. He said that the board will be recognized this next week in several ways, one of which will be a proclamation signed by the Mayor.
There was obvious pleasure exhibited by the School Board when members of the Student Council thanked each of the board members for the amount of time they spend on the board and the work they perform to make the school a better place. A token of their appreciation was the gift of a clock from the students.
Wellness Program
The employees of the Kingsland District will have a chance to utilize a health risk assessment very soon. It's called an Employee Wellness program and permits employees to go online and seek answers to various health questions and to enter various questions on their health and life style. The School District is picking up the tab; $560.00 for the year for all employees. It is hoped that early diagnosis or detection might result in less time lost at work due to illness or injury.
Activity Calendar
There was some discussion regarding reinstituting the Kingsland Activity Calendar. Some of the board members felt that the calendar was outdated when it went to print. Various activities were changed or cancelled and the public was receiving wrong information. For many years there has been a school calendar and it was, according to staff, dropped when it was hoped those people that were interested would go to the District web site. It was noted that not every one has a computer and has to search for clarification on school events. It was decided to take it to the community and get their feedback on starting the calendar again. They will study the issue for next year.
Other Business
• Chairman Mitch Lenz informed the board that the dates have been selected for the bidding process for the new 35,000 square foot addition and renovations of the Kingsland High School in Spring Valley. The bid print date will be March 8 making the bidding documents available March 12. The pre-bid conference has been set for March 22 and the opening of the bids will happen on April 10.
• The district has received an award in recognition for their fiscal responsibility and compliance with many state statutes. It's called the School Finance Award and was given to 73 other agencies state wide. One of the main qualifiers is the fiscal health of the district which includes such items as bond ratings and fund balances.
The next school board meeting will be Friday, March 16 at the Middle School.
