Felony Charges
• Kristin Kathleen Sheldon, 19, of Spring Valley, was charged in Fillmore County District Court with felony possession of a controlled substance - marijuana and methamphetamine. Sheldon is free after posting $1000 bond.
According to court records, Sheldon was stopped for a traffic violation in Spring Valley on February 21, at which time law enforcement officers found marijuana and methamphetamine in her vehicle. In addition to the felony charges, Sheldon also faces misdemeanor charges for possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle, driving while impaired and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Sheldon's next court appearance is scheduled for April 30, 2007.
• Tamera Lynn Austin, 37, of Austin, was charged in district court with possession of stolen checks, check forgery and receiving stolen property.
According to the criminal complaint, Austin, along with another woman and man, forged and cashed 10 checks totalling $950 belonging to an Eyota man on or around August 5, 2006.
Austin was released on her own recognizance with conditions. No date has been scheduled for her next court appearance.
Judge Judy
A researcher for the Judge Judy Show was in Preston on Tuesday looking at small claims cases that might be used on the TV show. The researcher, who is based in the Twin Cities and did not want her name used, said that she covers courts throughout the state of Minnesota for the show. On Monday, the woman had been at courthouses in Waseca, Albert Lea and Austin.
When asked if she had found any cases in Fillmore County suitable for the show, the researcher said, "One, but I can't tell you which one."
The researcher passes on the information to producers at the show, who in turn contact the plaintiff and defendant to see if they are interested in resolving their dispute in front of Judge Judy, who is a real judge.
When asked the time lag between identifying a case and it appearing on TV, the researcher said, "Pretty quick."
