Kingsland awards construction bids

WYKOFF - A motion by Mike Zimmer and second by Deb Dahl and a unanimous vote of the Kingsland School Board approved the awarding of bids for the construction contracts and Alternate No. 5-Kingsland Middle School Renovation at the May 5 meeting of the Kingsland School Board. The total bids were $12,264,488.00 which required a reduction of $1,209,000.00 to meet the referendum approved amount, roughly $60,000.00. Study groups had researched how to cut the expenses to meet budget and came up with several options most of which were plumbing.
Larry Tompkins offered some options to the board to make up that $60,000.00. He stated that there were many items that the group felt important to include but unable to include in acceptance of the bids. He proposed a 3 year capital plan with which to pay for these items. With State approval the district could borrow from itself for three years after which the deficit would be wiped out. According to Tompkins the district could have a larger chunk of money up front but there would be no interest on the money or issuance costs. Board members agreed to have further exploration of this option and report back to the board.
The bids accepted were as follows:
• Site Work Contract, Rochester Sand and Gravel, $817,883.00
• General Contract, Olympic Builders , $2,401,200.00
• Precast Concrete Contract, Wells Concrete Products Co., $635,525.00
• Roofing Contract, Smidt Construction, Inc., $502,337.00
• Aluminum/Glazing Contract, Ford Metro, Inc., $195,920.00
• GWB/EIFS Contract, Superior Contractors of Rochester, $365,000.00
• Wall Finishers Contract, Rich Prairie Painters, Inc., $160,750.00
• Acoustical Contract, Twin City Acoustics, Inc., $106,970.00
• Ceramic Tile Contract, Palmer Soderberg, Inc., $112,690.00
As a final gesture, Keith Stockman of DLR Group, Inc. presented the administration and Board members with a white hard hat by saying, "we have a construction project."
An open house is scheduled for later this month.
Other Business
One remaining piece of business was a new hire, the new High School Principal, Jon Ellerbusch. He said he is anxiously looking forward to working in the district.
