Kingsland School Board: Board recognizes retiring teachers

105 years of educating students of the Kingsland School District by three people was an opportunity for recognition by the School Board at the May 21 meeting. Judy Rose was retiring after 30 years, Carol Helgerson with 36 and Mary Grems had 39. Mitch Lentz presented plaques to the trio and expressed thanks for their dedication and service.
The Wykoff class of 1956 had their 50th reunion last year and it marked a couple of special occasions. In addition to the 50th reunion, class members took up a freewill donation for funds to give to the Kingsland Media Center. Proudly the class mates presented a check to the school district for $750.00. The board accepted the donation with thanks.
The public comment portion drew several members of the Kingsland girl's basketball team. The spokespeople urged the board to reconsider the policy regarding John Fenske and his upcoming position as Athletic Director. Last year Fenske was given one more year as coach and would then need to decide if he wanted to coach or be the Athletic Director. He had indicated that he wanted to be Athletic Director, which according to policy will prevent him from serving as girl's basketball coach. With that decision, the board will be interviewing applicants for girl's basketball coach. Fenske will then assume duties as Athletic Director.

In other board action:
• The District's technology plan was approved until year 2010. Also approved was membership in SEMNET, a co-op providing internet services to school districts. That service will result in a larger bandwidth for the district as well as access to Internet II.
• An update on the building project indicates the contractor hopes to get the building up so they can work inside over the winter. There has also been a response from the community to volunteer work that had been carved from the building project. Chairman Mitch Lentz says anyone interesting in volunteering should contact the District Office.
The groundbreaking for the new school is scheduled for May 25 at 10:30 a.m.
• On the financial side, there was some concern about the transportation budget going over because of the increased fuel costs. Administration said that diesel fuel had already been bid out for this year and that the budget should just about break even this year.
• The District has three checking accounts. One is for the General Fund, one for the Activity Fund and the third for Petty Cash. The Board had gone to local banks for bids on having those funds in their banks. Security State Bank got the General Fund, Home Federal for the Activity Account and Security State Bank for the Petty Cash. Larry Tompkins said the response was good and we have "good banks in our communities".
• The Board also designated the Auditor for the district. Lloyd Johnson received the bid again. Johnson also raised his bid by $3,000.00 making his bid $9,950.00. This would be a 2 year quote and would only increase if there are costs associated with the building project that are unexpected at this point.
• The next meeting will be June 18 at 5:00 p.m. at the Board Room in Wykoff.
