WHALAN - The Whalan City Council has plans to enter into a development agreement with Secluded Land Company of Desoto, Wisconsin. The company hopes to build a subdivision on 95 acres in Section 9 of Holt Township on an area across the Root River from the town that includes a large round hill known as Mount St. Jane.

The subdivision will consist of 11 to 12 units, with each lot being 2.5 acres or more. The plan calls for shared wells and sewage. The city of Whalan will not provide any services to the site.

Whalan Mayor Larry Johnson said that once Secluded Land Company comes up with a detailed development plan, that includes where roads and other infrastructure will be located, the city council can then decide whether to annex the property. Johnson said that one concern the city has is how a gravel pit on the land will be reclaimed.

"We need to know exactly what's going on before we can make a decision," Johnson said.He said that the city does not plan on revising its zoning ordinance which is presently administered by Fillmore County.

Johnson said that he is unsure when the development agreement will be completed and ready for the council to take action. He said that it is possible that the council could even call a special meeting to move the project along.
