The Houston Nature Center is owned and operated by the City of Houston, with no state (or county) funding. There you can meet Alice the Great Horned Owl, check out the hands-on nature displays, extensive native prairie plantings, and recycled bicycle art. There are also walk-in tent sites available for camping at only $13/night on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Houston Nature Center serves as the trailhead for the Root River Trail in Houston. Despite the trail being state owned and operated, it is open for use too. But be prepared for a bit of an obstacle course, as recent winds have blown trees and branches down onto the trail with little likelihood of it being cleared before the government is running again.
The Houston Nature Center is open Thursdays from 11-4:30, Fridays - Mondays from 9:30-4:30, and is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Contact the Center at 507-896-4668 or nature@acegroup.cc for more information, or check out the website at www.houstonmn.com.
