Kingsland sets 2008 levy

WYKOFF - The Kingsland School Board met in regular session on September 17. Among the items taken action on was certifying the Proposed Property Tax Levy for payable 2008. The proposed maximum levy will be $2,104,864.22 as compared with the actual for 2007 when the levy was $1,532,051.34.
One particular line item stood out as showing a large increase in the Health & Safety section. The proposed maximum levy showed an increase to $710,624.08 which is attributed to the building project coming in over budget. The associated costs in fire sprinklers, alarms, indoor air quality and asbestos removal were required to be plugged into the Health & Safety section. A call to Kathy Beevers, District Business Manager gave good insight and she explained that these additional costs will not be levied all in one year but spread out over a period of years. When a government body passes a proposed maximum levy it means that it can go down but not up. School officials are confident that reductions will be made in this item to bring it down considerably.
• A report was given on the Enrollment figures for the coming year. Originally officials had projected a loss of 38 students in the elementary grades but as school began that number was changed to a loss of 20 students.
• The school calendars for 2007-08 and 2008-09 were approved by the board. Graduation will remain on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend.
• There were some new District hires: Jon Dahl, Long Term Spanish Substitute; Kim Bly, 9th Grade Volleyball Coach; Sarah James, Speech Pathologist; Wayne Hebrink, Head Girls Basketball Coach; C.J. Boerger, Head Boys Basketball Coach. The resignation of Rebecca Scherger, Special Education Para was approved.
• Pat Simpkins, DLR Group gave a progress report on the new building construction. He said that the project is on schedule to get the building enclosed before winter and that things are going well.
