I am curious about the differences between buying cloth diapers on my own versus using a diaper service.

The obvious benefit of using a diaper service is that the diapers are delivered and taken away to wash. Parents are still in charge of purchasing their own covers. The diapers used for diaper services are prefolds only. For parents using a laundromat, diaper services are a great option.

One benefit to parents purchasing their own diapers, is choosing whatever style they prefer. Secondly, parents can keep increasing the amount of diapers they have, thus decreasing the amount of times they wash them each week. And thirdly, when the next child comes, parents already have the diapers they need, saving even more money! Yes, this does require parents to wash their own diapers, but it also gives them the greatest control in style, washing soaps and additives, and saves the most money to put away in that college fund! According to The Real Diapers Association, "Subscribing to a diaper service costs between $13 and $17 each week depending on how many diapers a family decides to order. Over the course of two years, the family will spend about $1500 per baby, roughly the same cost as disposables."
