Lanesboro School finishes fiscal year with strong financial performance

LANESBORO - "This is a fun district to audit, because it has strong fund balances," CPA Pam Ristau told the Lanesboro School Board at their Thursday, November 15 meeting.
Ristau presented the district's audited financial statements for the year ending June 30, 2007.
Highlights for the year, included:
• The General Fund undesignated fund balance increased by $340,694.
• The overall general fund increased by $260,620.
• Net assets increased by $573,035 with the purchase of two school buses and one van, as well as the purchase of property.
• District revenues were $4,108,303 verses expenses of $3,814,857.
Ristau commented that the district's undesignated fund balance of $3,159,075 might be considered high by the Minnesota Department of Education, but it is balanced against paying off future debt. The debt includes bonds valued at $2,910,000.
Ristau praised the district for its strong financial performance.
MCA Testing
High School Principal Brett Clark updated the board on Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment testing. Clarke said that the MCA tests are administered in reading and math to third through eighth graders; a writing test to ninth graders; a reading test to tenth graders; and a math test to eleventh graders.
Clarke said that at the elementary level, scores are above average in reading and math. He said that scores at the high school are above average in reading, but fall off in math (only 25% of students earned proficient scores on the math test). Clarke believes that this is due in part to the lack of motivation at the high school level as scores do not have individual consequence. Next year, reading and math scores will be part of the graduation standards and he expects overall performance to improve.
Clarke said that the district does use scores to drive curriculum. He cited the Aims-Web testing program, used in conjunction with the Hiawatha Education District, which will be administered three times a year at the elementary level to identify problem areas. Remediation can then be provided as is necessary.
Other Business
• Approved winter sports contracts - Girls Basketball: Terry Highum, head coach; J.B. Mathison, assistant coach; Cody Hungerholt, junior high. Boys Basketball: John Smith, head coach; Chris Hanson, assistant coach; Justin Rein and Mike Wilford, junior high.
• Approved early out at Christmas Break for 11:14 a.m.
• Set the tax hearing for November 29, at 7:00 p.m.
