Preston City Council Report: Caboose for Preston

Fri, Nov 23rd, 2007
Posted in Government

PRESTON - Richard Petsch, Preston Historical Society, informed the city council of the historical society's purchase of a Milwaukee Road Railroad caboose at their regular November 19 meeting. Petsch said that a down payment has been made to purchase the old caboose in Marsh, Iowa. He felt the addition of the caboose, to be placed on tracks on the east side of the elevator, would be a real asset to the historical society and the city.

Tourists will eventually be able to walk through the caboose. Petsch explained that the interior of the caboose is in very good shape. The exterior will need welding and sandblasting and stenciling. The balance due to purchase the caboose is payable within 18 months and is not expected to require any funds from the city.

Other Business

• The council accepted the low quote from Scheevel and Sons Construction of $48,465.00 to do the grading, drainage and base for the tennis courts. The total final construction costs for the tennis courts are expected to be $103,766.50.

• A motion was approved to call for quotes for city attorney for 2008 and for the official newspaper for 2008.

• Rich Irish, Preston Motor Mart, asked that the council approve a 15 minute parking zone for the convenience of his customers, especially those with semi trucks or pick-ups with trailers. Irish added that he had spoken to the homeowner on Mart Street and that there was no objection. The council approved a resolution adopting a 15 minute parking zone on the north side of Mart Street.
