Water damages books at Fillmore Central High School

HARMONY - Fillmore Central High School Principal, Heath Olstad told the school board at their December 17 meeting that over 300 books were lost due to water damage when a sink overflowed in a second floor science room and leaked into the first floor library.
According to Olstad, a faucet was left partially running in a lab sink when school concluded on Friday, December 7. The damage was not discovered until December 10.
"A custodian was through that area two hours after class was let out and there was no water overflowing on the floor," Olstad said, describing the flow as a drip.
Olstad said that he had reviewed security film and while some students were in the area of the lab sink during class, he did not believe it was an act of vandalism as none of the drains were plugged.
Superintendent Myrna Luehmann said that an insurance adjuster has been to the school to look at the damage. She said that the school's insurance would cover the damage, which is expected to be more than $10,000.
Olstad said that he has put in a work order for maintenance to install shut off valves on the faucets in the science lab. It is expected that the work will be completed during the upcoming Christmas holidays.
AYP Improvement Plan
Special Education Director, Michelle Breitsprecher, briefed the board on a two-year plan for improvement in teaching special education math. The district was found to be deficient in meeting Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in math for 11 Special Education students. The plan will be submitted to the state Department of Education for approval.
The improvement plan includes staff development to enhance teacher skills as well as curriculum changes that will address the needs of these students.
Other business
• The school board accepted the resignations of Jane Montgomery as Softball Coach and Darrin Ellsworth as Baseball Coach. A search is underway to fill both positions.
• The school board certified the 2007 levy payable in 2008 at $1,402,993.70.
The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 30, at 5:00 p.m. at the Middle School Media Center in Preston.
