Extension Educator for Fillmore/Houston counties

Have you questioned if grazing and in particularly rotation grazing can be successful on a large scale? Many of the examples given have been for small and medium-sized operations. Perhaps there is a place for rotational grazing in your beef operation!

A SE Minnesota Grazing Workshop will emphasize rotational grazing management adapted for estrous synchronization. Tom Scarponcini, who farms near Rushford, MN, will host a grazing workshop. The workshop will be held on August 13, 2011 from 1 P.M. to 3 P.M at Brandy, wine Farms

Scarponcini has approximately 250 purebred Gelbvieh cow calf pairs plus replacement heifers that he manages in groups of 50 head for estrous synchronization and artificial insemination. Dividing his pasture into paddocks and furnishing water in each paddock has allowed him to more closely manage the forages and his breeding program. Scarponcini will discuss his method of fence line weaning of calves in the fall and his handling facilities for calving and artificial insemination.

Take this opportunity to see for yourself how grazing and breeding management can make a difference in your herd. The farm is located 6 miles north of Rushford on Highway 43, than east 1 ¾ miles on Brandywine Road. Follow "Grazing Workshop" sign off Highway 43 north of Rushford.

This grazing day is a cooperative effort of the Minnesota Grazing Lands Conservation Association, the Winona Soil and Water Conservation District, Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Hiawatha Resource Conservation and Development Council, and the University of Minnesota Extension offices of Winona, Fillmore, and Houston Counties.
